This initiative is the result of a collaboration between UniPod and the Mafikeng Digital Innovation Hub (MDiHub). Announced on April 16, it marks a new milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey.

Borderless laboratories 🔬

Research exchanges and interactions in Botswana can now take place in a virtual environment. Physical presence is no longer a systematic requirement, paving the way for more flexible and faster scientific collaboration between researchers, wherever they may be.

Richie Moalosi, director of UniPod, sees this technology as a true springboard—now essential in the era of the “fourth industrial revolution.” In his view, the project reflects the country’s concrete adaptation to the demands of globalization and the rapid acceleration of digital innovation.

The program will enable researchers to develop applications and solutions powered by artificial intelligence. These can be deployed across multiple sectors, including the economy, education, and healthcare. The objective is clear: accelerate the pace of work by enabling direct collaboration between research partners without the need for travel, while reducing logistical constraints.

A strategic vision for the future 🌍

According to data published in 2022 by Grand View Research, the virtual reality market could reach nearly $69.6 billion by 2028. With a growth rate estimated at 18% between 2018 and 2020, the figures highlight a global surge in interest for immersive technologies. As early as six years ago, projections already placed the sector on a strong upward trajectory—one that now confirms its strategic potential.

Botswana aims to position itself as an active player in this technological shift, aligning with a broader dynamic of innovation and competitiveness on the global stage.

As this breakthrough unfolds, a key question emerges: is the African continent ready to turn virtual reality into a true engine for scientific and economic development?
