Elon Musk has finally bought Twitter. The entrepreneur, who is by the way the richest man on Earth, decided to make big changes in the social network. The most talked about is the end of the free and exclusive certification. Let us explain it all to you.
What is certification on Twitter ?
Until now, Twitter’s blue Certified badge indicated to users the authenticity of a public service account. To earn it, the account had to be :
- Authentic: The user’s identity had to be verified with either an official website, ID or email address
- Notable: The account must represent or be associated with a recognized person or brand based on notoriety criteria. This includes media coverage, Google Trends, Wikipedia, number of subscribers or mentions and other industry-specific references.
- Active: The account must be complete, public at the time of application and have been used within the last six months prior to application. In addition, the account must have a confirmed email address and phone number. Finally, it must not have been locked for 12 hours or 7 days in the last 12 months for violating Twitter’s rules.
One thing is for sure, Twitter certification is not available to just anyone. With this badge, you have the peace of mind that a tweet does not come from a fake account. Since Twitter is one of the primary sources of information for many users, this badge is a way to slow down the spread of fake news. But things are about to change.
Want to be certified? You’ll have to pay for it🤑
Elon Musk wants everyone to be able to get certified. BUT, you’ll have to pay for it. Indeed, the blue badge is expected to be included in the Twitter Blue subscription. And you are probably wondering what Twitter Blue is. Well, it’s a paid monthly subscription that gives access to premium Twitter features: undo tweets, bookmark folder, custom application icons, custom navigation, read mode, themes and popular articles. Editing tweets may even be a feature exclusive to this subscription.
Currently offered at $5/month in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, this subscription could increase to $8/month. It would then include account certification and other features such as priority in replies, mentions and search, the ability to post long videos and audio, and see half as many ads.
We need to pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?

Another benefit mentioned by Elon Musk is the collaboration with media that want to offer a paywall bypass for revenue. Still according to him, this subscription system would give Twitter an income to « reward content creators ».
