Barely gone, blue certification badges are already back on Twitter 🐦

Last Thursday, Twitter ended the old account certification system, which gave the right to a blue badge. Normally, only Twitter Blue subscribers would be entitled to this badge. However, this weekend there were some changes.

Some accounts regained their certifications, without paying😯

If you haven’t read our article from last week, available by clicking here, here’s a quick summary of the facts. On April 20, Twitter decided to end the old certification system. The blue badge is now nothing more than a marker for Twitter Blue subscribers, the monthly subscription to the social network.
After the end of the old verification system, three Twitter accounts, including two that had publicly stated that they would not pay for verification, had kept their badges, giving the impression that they had paid for their Twitter Blue subscription. However, it was revealed that they had not paid, and that the cost of their Twitter Blue subscription was covered by Elon Musk himself.
The phenomenon seems like it happened again this weekend. Many accounts, mainly with over a million followers, have seen their blue badges reappear with the mention that they had paid for Twitter Blue. But what is it really?

Stars no longer want the blue badge equally awarded to the deceased🤬

As explained above, having the blue badge on Twitter means that one is subscribed to Twitter Blue. And to be one, the user has to have their phone number verified and of course pay the monthly subscription fee. After Twitter’s announcement to remove the old certification method, many people protested and said they would not pay for the subscription once their badge was removed. They were surprised when they saw the badge reappear, with the mention that they had verified their number and paid.

By reinstating the old blue badges, Elon Musk is contradicting himself, as he had claimed that the new paid certification was equal. Moreover, systematically displaying that the user has paid for Twitter Blue, even though this is not always the case, gives unjustified prestige to the new verification system. So far, the new certification system has only attracted 5% of the 407,000 profiles that benefited from the old certification method, according to researcher Travis Brown. The vice goes even further, as the profiles of deceased people like Chadwick Boseman or Kobe Bryant show that their numbers have been verified.

Many personalities are currently trying to have this new mandatory badge removed. So we are not yet at the end of our surprises.
