The Chinese group ByteDance is under fire and wants to catch the possible bans on its flagship app TikTok. Already banned from the work devices of many government officials around the world, the social network could be banned for all in the United States. In this context, ByteDance unveils a new application, just as viral: Lemon8.
What do we know about Lemon8 ⁉
It’s a real race to the top of the ranking that our favorite applications are fighting. We have some serious challengers. On one side, Meta with its flagship apps like Facebook and Instagram and ByteDance with TikTok.
It is worth noting that TikTok has revolutionized the way we consume short videos without really focusing on photos. A strong argument to shade existing apps and anticipate the banning of TikTok?
Even if the timing seems wrong, ByteDance would like to deploy Lemon8; which exists since 2020 in Asia (Japan, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore); in the United States and everywhere else.
Designed for users interested in beauty, wellness and travel, Lemon8 is a social media platform that looks like a hybrid version of Instagram and Pinterest. It can count on an important asset to convert its users: the TikTok algorithm is frighteningly efficient at making recommendations for content and accounts to follow.
On the application stores, Lemon8 defines itself as « a platform for sharing content with a young community« . Like TikTok, which is particularly popular among Western teenagers, Lemon8 would like to attract younger people to get them used to this new social network. To do this, it can count on offensive slogans like the one it puts forward on platforms such as the AppStore or GooglePlay: « This is THE destination for sharing and discovery. » A true ode to travel.
Today, Lemon8 has become the most popular lifestyle app on the other side of the Atlantic, ranking #1 in the App Store. This is a significant leap for the app, which until now had never made it into the top 10 apps in the US.
The same concerns for Lemon8 ? 🤔
Beyond wanting to offer beautiful, authentic and diverse content, we should not put aside the strong controversies that weigh on the ByteDance group, in addition to the suspicions of spying and paying big influencers to promote the application.
These are important details because even before its launch, the charges against TikTok are reverberating around Lemon8. With ByteDance at the helm, the new app promises to be closely scrutinized, as Lindsay Gorman, head of technology and geopolitics at the German Marshall Fund, and former technology advisor to the Biden administration, details.
According to an article in the New York Times, Lemon8 will initially focus on topics such as fashion, healthy food and well-being. But other themes should see the day on this new social network. One thing is clear, the appearance of Lemon8 shows that the ByteDance group is undeterred in its ambitions to become one of the world’s leading social network creators, including in the United States.
Unfortunately, no official release date has been announced yet. But given the growing popularity of the app on foreign stores, we can expect it to land here in the next few months. We’ll keep you posted on what’s going on, with a download link when it’s available. In the meantime, if you want to test the application, don’t hesitate to use a VPN! Thanks to a virtual private network, you’ll be able to access the Google Play and the American App store. This is the only way to download Lemon8 and test the app.
