Apple unveils the iPhone Duo : its first foldable, starting at $1,999 📱

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, its new foldable model. The device introduces an entirely new form factor to the iPhone lineup, with two screens connected by a hinge and an inner display that becomes accessible once the phone is opened. Apple’s goal is to combine the familiarity of an iPhone with the versatility of a device with a much larger display surface. Closed, it’s roughly the size of a passport and can be used with one hand. Opened, it reveals the largest screen ever built into an iPhone.

A completely redesigned form factor 🛠️

The iPhone Duo stands out with its asymmetric shape and two rounded corners that invite you to open the device. Its two halves are connected by a continuous frame that wraps around the inner display.

Apple worked to match the aspect ratio of both screens, making the transition between the closed and open states feel more natural. The company also moved the FaceTime camera underneath the inner display, keeping it discreet until it’s actually in use.

The hinge is another key piece of this design. It supports the center of the screen as it opens and keeps the panel perfectly flat. Its mechanism uses a variable-torque profile to precisely control the opening and closing motion. A set of magnets then ensures a firm, precise hold.

Once open, the iPhone Duo becomes the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made. Its internal architecture packs certain components into the raised camera area, freeing up space for the battery. The frame is built from grade 5 titanium, chosen for its strength despite the phone’s thinness.

A foldable screen built to last 🖥️

Apple paid particular attention to the durability of the foldable display. A layer of nano-textured polymer protection is meant to add rigidity and resist scratches. The OLED panel is protected by high-strength glass placed both above and below it. Viscoelastic adhesives let the different layers slide against each other during folding, much like the pages of a book.

A titanium plate also forms the lower part of the assembly. The hinge contains more than a hundred small precision components, while carbon fiber plates give the screen a rigid, lightweight structure. Apple says it uses AI algorithms during manufacturing to match each hinge to its ideal housing. A confocal laser then scans the surface of each device. Up to 25 microscopic layers of photopolymer can be 3D-printed to smooth out any remaining irregularities. On the outside, the iPhone Duo features Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, along with IP68 dust and water resistance.

Two batteries, one battery life 🔋

The iPhone Duo houses a battery on each of its two halves. Electronic components and algorithms manage their charging, discharging, and balancing so they behave as a single battery.

Apple says the iPhone Duo delivers up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner screen and up to 44 hours using the outer screen. When both screens are used evenly, Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours per charge.

The phone also supports fast charging: Apple says it can reach 50% charge in about 20 minutes, and up to five hours of outer-screen video playback after just five minutes on the charger. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, a choice that lets Apple free up more internal space to increase battery capacity.

A camera system built for a foldable 📸

Photography is central to the iPhone Duo. The phone features a 48MP Fusion main camera with a fast aperture, a large sensor, and sensor-shift optical stabilization.

It supports 4K video at 120 frames per second and can shoot slow-motion footage. A 48MP Fusion ultra-wide camera rounds out the system. Apple also highlights its computational photography capabilities and new photographic styles with texture and grain controls.

The foldable format opens up new possibilities for photos in particular. The outer screen can double as a viewfinder for selfies shot with the rear cameras, letting the subject see their own framing to better position themselves. A Center Stage front camera also lets you shoot photos and videos in different orientations without having to flip the phone.

FaceTime and new ways to connect 🤳

The FaceTime camera built under the inner display lets you make calls whenever the iPhone Duo is fully open or set down on a surface. Dual Capture lets you share footage from the front and rear cameras at the same time, so you can show your face while sharing what you’re looking at.

Apple is also introducing Duo FaceTime: someone standing next to you can join the call from the outer screen. The phone can also be propped on a table to watch a video without any extra support, with audio algorithms adjusting the sound based on the position of both halves of the device.

Apps built for the bigger screen 📱

Apple is also working with developers to adapt apps to this new format. Zoom, for example, can use the larger screen to show shared content and participants at the same time. Slack can display more of a workspace at once. Certain AI features can run directly on the device.

Netflix, for its part, makes use of both screens: users can browse trailers on the outer display, then open the iPhone Duo for a more immersive viewing experience. The iPhone Duo can also enter StandBy mode when set down, even without charging, displaying weather, calendar, music, and notifications. It can also act as a bedside clock and wake users with a gradually brightening light synced to the alarm.

iOS 27 adapts to the iPhone Duo 💻

Apple has completely rethought the software experience to match this new format. Under iOS 27, essential controls move to the sides, freeing up more vertical space for content. The Home Screen dock is now oriented vertically, and the status bar takes on a more compact format tucked into a corner of the display.

As users move from the outer to the inner screen, the interface expands progressively: controls stay in place while content adapts to the available space. The larger display also lets users view two Home Screen pages at once, check their inbox while messages stay visible, or run two apps side by side.

The iPhone Duo also responds to how it’s positioned. It can be used open, closed, flipped, or partially folded, and the system automatically adjusts the display accordingly. When partially closed, iOS moves content away from the fold to make it easier to interact with.

A24 Pro and C2 driving it all ⚙️

The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s new A24 Pro chip, paired with a new display engine capable of driving both screens simultaneously and ensuring smooth transitions between them. A new cooling system is also designed to sustain performance during intensive use, particularly for high-frame-rate gaming.

Apple says the chip delivers up to 35% more sustained performance compared to the iPhone 17 Pro. The phone also includes Apple’s new C2 modem, which improves several components of cellular connectivity and uses algorithms to enable faster reconnection in areas with weak coverage.

Apple also promises faster data speeds overall: upload speeds can reach up to 50% faster than what the C1X allowed. In the US, the C2 also supports mmWave 5G while using up to 15% less power.

A $1,999 iPhone 💰

Apple is rolling out new accessories alongside the iPhone Duo. The iPhone Duo Folio includes a kickstand that folds away when not in use, and a new case protects each half of the phone separately.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 before tax with 256GB of storage, with capacity going up to 2TB. Pre-orders begin October 16, with availability starting October 23.

With this new model, Apple reshapes several elements of the iPhone experience around this new foldable format: two screens, a large inner display, a custom-built hinge, a reorganized version of iOS, and camera and multitasking features built specifically for the format are the main pillars of this new device.
