In Tokyo, a one-of-a-kind café opened its doors in June 2021. Unlike traditional establishments, the servers here are not standing behind a counter or moving between tables. Instead, they operate remotely, piloting robots from their homes. This revolutionary initiative, led by the Japanese Ory Laboratory Inc., aims to provide professional opportunities for people with disabilities.

A revolutionary concept 🤖

Upon entering the café, visitors are greeted by OriHime-D humanoid robots, which stand 1.2 meters tall. These robots gracefully move between tables, take orders, and interact with customers. What makes this experience truly unique is that the robots are remotely controlled by individuals who are bedridden or living with severe disabilities. Using adaptive devices, these operators can engage with customers and regain a sense of social connection.

Additionally, each robot is equipped with a badge displaying the photo and name of its operator. This allows customers to choose whom they wish to interact with by consulting a brochure presenting the various servers.

Technology serving humanity 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

At the heart of this project is Kentaro Yoshifuji, CEO of Ory Laboratory Inc., whose personal story served as a major inspiration. Bedridden for over three years due to an illness, he experienced firsthand the isolation and forced inactivity. According to him, it is essential to find solutions for the millions of people who cannot leave their homes. “It breaks my heart that they feel useless or like a burden to their families,” he shared.

Through a partnership with the Kanagawa Institute of Technology and the University of Tokyo, the Ory Lab team succeeded in designing a unique space. By combining cyberspace with the physical environment, customers and operators interact in an immersive way. Additionally, augmented reality technologies enable the movements of the servers to be translated into virtual avatars, making the experience even more immersive and engaging.

A social impact 🌏

In Japan, no fewer than 34 million people are confined to their homes due to illness, disability, or advanced age. For these individuals, the Avatar Robot Cafe DAWN represents more than just a job. It is an opportunity to regain a social role and a place in society.

The story of Sae, one of the café’s operators, is telling.

“Since I started working here, I finally feel useful and more positive,” she revealed to local media.

This initiative helps individuals regain confidence and improve their quality of life.

Moreover, the innovation has sparked interest beyond Japan’s borders. The project’s founders continue their research to develop similar applications in other sectors. The café has also been recognized at the prestigious Laval Virtual Awards, which celebrate advancements in virtual and augmented reality.
