Senegal’s digital minister meets Wave to talk public-sector rollout 💳

Senegal is working to strengthen ties between the government and its digital ecosystem. As part of that push, Telecommunications and Digital Minister Samba Diouf visited Wave Senegal’s offices on Thursday, September 10, continuing a series of meetings with tech companies. The visit touched on innovation, digital services, and possible collaboration with the state, as the country pushes ahead with its digital transformation agenda.

Wave, a fintech player in Senegal 💳🌍

During the meeting, Wave executives walked the minister through the company’s structure, its growth model, and its innovation and expansion plans.

Wave, a mobile-money and electronic finance company, currently operates in several West and Central African countries and says it plans to keep expanding across the continent, particularly in French-speaking markets. The company touts free account maintenance and instant service as core to its offering.

That footprint also feeds into Senegal’s broader digital economy, positioning Wave as a player in expanding everyday digital usage across the country.

Public services go digital 📱🏛️

Talks also covered potential collaboration with the public sector. The goal is to make digital public services easier to access and to support the digitalization of several priority areas.

Transport, health, and the treasury were named among the sectors in play. The broader aim is to push wider adoption of digital tools in citizen-facing services and to strengthen the private sector’s contribution to the country’s digital transformation.

Regulation takes center stage ⚖️💻

The discussions also touched on the Telecommunications Code and the sector’s regulatory framework, against a backdrop of fast-moving technology and shifting digital habits.

The idea is to better account for these changes and flag any constraints that could slow down digitalization. The ministry also wants to keep talking through data, compliance, and regulatory developments — working sessions with the relevant teams could follow to dig deeper into these topics.

A push for more innovation 🚀📲

Following the meeting, the minister encouraged Wave to keep investing in innovation and staying engaged with Senegal’s digital ecosystem. More broadly, the approach rests on closer collaboration between the state, fintechs, and other tech players — aimed at expanding digital services and supporting the goals of the New Deal Technologique, Senegal’s national digital transformation strategy.
