On Spotify, your playlists tell your story — your conscious rap phase, your afrobeats marathons, late-night chill sessions, or sudden J-pop obsessions. But organizing them on your phone? That’s always been a mess. For over 15 years, playlist folder management has been stuck on desktop, like a relic from the internet café era.
Now, Spotify is finally closing that gap by bringing full playlist folder management directly to its mobile app.
A 2010 feature finally arrives in 2026 🕰️
Playlist folders aren’t some flashy new AI-powered experiment. They’ve been around since 2010 on desktop, letting users group playlists into themed folders — workouts, work, travel, or even “guilty pleasures.”
Until now, though, creating, renaming, or reorganizing those folders required using the desktop app or web player. On mobile, you could only view them — frozen in place.
In practice, that meant if you discovered a new vibe on the go and wanted to neatly file it away, you had to wait until you got back to a computer. In a world where most listening happens on smartphones, that limitation felt increasingly out of touch.
What’s coming to iOS and Android 📱
The shift is happening behind the scenes in version 9.1.34.12 of the Spotify app. A teardown spotted by Android Authority and other tech outlets reveals new strings of code pointing to upcoming playlist folder management on mobile.
Based on these findings, users may soon be able to:
- Create playlist folders via the “Create” button
- Create folders directly from the “Your Library” tab (if the Create button is disabled)
- Add or remove playlists from folders on the fly
- Rename and delete folders, with confirmation prompts to prevent mistakes
In short, Spotify appears ready to bring mobile in line with desktop — letting you manage your library fully from your phone.
Good news, with a few caveats ⏳
There are still a couple of important nuances. First, this feature hasn’t been officially announced or widely rolled out yet. What we’re seeing comes from an APK teardown — essentially clues hidden in a development build. As usual with these discoveries, there’s no guarantee on timing or even final release.
Second, a key question remains for power users: will Spotify support subfolders on mobile, as it does on desktop? Or will it stop at a single level of organization?
For listeners who meticulously sort music by genre, subgenre, and mood, that detail could make the difference between a welcome upgrade and a true organizational breakthrough.
A long-overdue win for playlist perfectionists 🏁
Better late than never. By finally bringing playlist folder management to mobile, Spotify is fixing one of its most frustrating blind spots.
This isn’t a flashy, headline-grabbing feature — but it’s exactly the kind of quality-of-life improvement that makes a daily difference, especially for users who live through their playlists.
Now, all that’s left is to see when it rolls out — and how deep Spotify goes with mobile organization. But one thing is certain: if you’ve ever spent hours organizing playlists on desktop only to face chaos on mobile, this update might feel like a small personal victory.
