« AI will fundamentally change every category of software, starting with the most important one: search. Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI co-pilot and chat, to help people get more out of search and the web. » These are the words of Satya Nadella, president and CEO of Microsoft, as he introduced the new Bing and Edge, boosted with the help of the creators of ChatGPT.
Reinventing search on the web 🔍
The way we search the web hasn’t changed in 20 years. You type a keyword, and you have millions of links that appear. This way of searching works in 2 cases: When you are looking for a website, or when you need basic information like weather or sports scores. But when we try to do more complex searches like « Pros and cons of the best vacuum cleaners on the market », we just have a list of websites, where to go. And most of the time, we open a link, 1 minute later we are back on the search page to try to find the answer in another link.
To solve this problem and revolutionize search, Microsoft has partnered with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, to provide a set of capabilities and techniques called the Prometheus model. It is advertised as more powerful than chatGPT and has additional qualities such as :
- Improved relevance of results
- Annotated responses
- Up-to-date results provided
- Geolocation understanded
- Increased security
Your new co-pilot for the web 🤖
Bing may be a name that doesn’t ring a bell. It’s Microsoft’s search engine, a lesser known alternative to Google. But things may change. Indeed, with its new Bing, Microsoft wants to create a co-pilot that will assist you while you browse the web. By applying artificial intelligence to its search algorithm, Microsoft wants to offer a new experience.
A better search 🧐
With the new Bing, you’ll have a familiar, but updated search experience with more relevant results for simple things like sports scores, stock quotes and weather. A new sidebar that displays more comprehensive answers if you want them.
Complete answers 😲
No more hours of juggling different pages to compile different results, Bing will do it for you. For example, you can get detailed instructions on how to replace eggs with another ingredient in a cake you’re baking, without having to scroll through multiple results.
A new chat experience 📨
A creative spark💡
ChatGPT had set the web on fire with its ability to generate content from simple written requests. Well, Bing can do that too, and do it better. It can write an email, create a 5-day vacation itinerary, with links to book your travel and accommodation, prepare for a job interview. And unlike ChatGPT, the new Bing cites all its sources, so you can see the links to the web content it references.
Even Edge will have AI
From the Edge sidebar, you’ll have the ability to ask for a summary of a long financial report to get the main points – and then use the chat feature to ask for a comparison to a competitor’s financial data and automatically put it into a table.
You’ll also be able to ask Edge to help you compose content, such as a LinkedIn post, by specifying the tone, format and length of the message.
