The first headline in last week’s #TechFriday was about Apple’s Vision Pro. One of our readers wanted to know if there was any alternative to Apple’s $3499 headset 😆. So that’s the subject of today’s Ask Griots.

A not-so-new category 🥽

With its Vision Pro, Apple has entered a new product category: virtual reality headsets, commonly known as VR headsets. This product category is not new, quite the contrary.

The concept of virtual reality dates back to the 1960s. But it was in 2012 that Oculus, since acquired by Meta, brought the technology back into the mainstream. Since then, HTC, Sony, Google and Samsung have all taken an interest in this technology, without really finding success.

Meta, the market leader ∞

Since the acquisition of Oculus, Meta has continued to develop this technology and offer headsets over the years. Its latest, the Meta Quest 3, was released in October 2023. It starts at €549.

A top-of-the-range version, the Meta Quest Pro, starts at 1,200€. Still in the high-end sector, we also find the HTC Vive XR Elite priced at 1099€.

These 3 headsets offer around 70% of the capabilities of the Apple Vision Pro. If you want to try out VR without spending $3499, the choice is yours.
