WhatsApp adds “Writing Help,” an AI assistant for your messages 💬

WhatsApp is taking message personalization up a notch with Writing Help, a new AI-powered writing assistant built directly into the app. Think of it as a lightweight co-pilot that helps you craft messages—whether you want them professional, playful, empathetic, or just polished.

Your new messaging sidekick ✍️

Say goodbye to writer’s block. A quick tap on the pencil icon activates Writing Help in both private and group chats. From there, the AI instantly suggests different variations of your draft—professional, funny, kind, or simply corrected. Adding nuance, humor, or polish to your messages has never been easier.

The real kicker is choice. Need a formal note for work? A witty one-liner for the family chat? Or a comforting reply for a friend? The assistant adapts to each context, shifting roles from proofreader to language coach to joke generator.

Privacy front and center 🛡️

But WhatsApp insists it’s not trading privacy for convenience. The company is rolling out a “Private Processing” system: neither WhatsApp nor parent company Meta can see your messages or the AI’s suggestions. Nothing is stored, and the feature is off by default—leaving it up to users to switch on if they want to give it a try.

For now, Writing Help is launching in English and rolling out first in the U.S. and a handful of other countries. Broader availability and support for more languages are already on WhatsApp’s roadmap for the coming months.

With Writing Help, WhatsApp is stepping deeper into the intersection of instant messaging and AI, while keeping privacy at the forefront. The bigger question, though, may not be how good the AI is—but whether we’re ready to let an algorithm help shape our words.
