Disney+, the streaming giant, has just announced the long-awaited launch of its paid account-sharing system. This new feature is now available in Europe, the U.S., Canada, and many other countries, as part of the company’s strategy to regulate account sharing between friends or family.
Affordable « Additional Member » option 🤑
The new system allows subscribers to add an extra member to their account, even if they don’t live under the same roof. In the U.S., this option is priced at $6.99 per month for a Standard subscription, while a Premium subscription will cost $9.99. Although the official prices in euros have yet to be announced, it’s expected to be around €5.99 for a Standard account in France.
However, it’s important to note that this option will only be available for one additional member per account and will not apply to the Standard plan with ads.
Compared to its direct competitor, Netflix, Disney+ offers a slightly better deal. Netflix charges $7.99 for an additional member. Furthermore, Disney+ doesn’t differentiate pricing between account types for this option, unlike Netflix.
Disney states that subscriptions are intended for use within a single household, defined as a set of devices associated with the subscriber’s primary residence. The « Additional Member » option is specifically designed for those outside this household.
Alternatives for Users 🔄️
For users who don’t wish to add a paid member, Disney+ offers an alternative. Existing profiles can be transferred to a new subscription, allowing the new subscriber to keep their viewing history and settings without starting over. However, certain profile types, such as children’s profiles or primary account holders, are not eligible for transfer.
Beyond account sharing, Disney+ subscribers can still use their account while traveling. They simply need to mark their location as temporary using the “I’m traveling” option. If the household’s primary address changes, users can also update their location via a code verification process.
