The social network X, under Elon Musk’s leadership, is taking a step toward transparency by introducing labels dedicated to parody accounts. These new tags, being rolled out progressively, aim to clearly distinguish humorous accounts from the official entities they imitate.
Transparency first 🔒
Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, now rebranded as X, the platform has undergone major changes. Among them, the paid access to account verification has caused considerable confusion. Now, X is trying to address this by announcing the deployment of labels to identify parody accounts. The objective is clear: to ensure users are not misled by accounts mimicking official entities.
« We designed these labels to increase transparency and to ensure that users are not deceived into thinking such accounts belong to the entity being parodied. », X stated in a post.
The new labels will appear on both the posts and profiles of parody accounts. X explains that these tags will enable clear identification and reduce misunderstandings. While the labels are currently optional, they will soon become mandatory for all parody accounts.
Strengthened authenticity rules 🔒
Parody accounts must comply with X’s rules, particularly those related to authenticity. Any account accused of impersonation or deemed misleading faces penalties, including removal. X encourages users to report violations using its integrated tools.
Owners of parody accounts can declare their nature directly in the account settings. A simple yet crucial procedure to contribute to the collective transparency effort initiated by X.
A response to an amplified problem ☄️
Initially, verification badges served a similar purpose by distinguishing official accounts from others. However, with the introduction of paid verification, this system lost its reliability, creating fertile ground for impersonators. Parody accounts without badges were also part of the charm of the old Twitter, offering moments of satire and humor. Today, X is attempting to repair the damage by implementing these new labels, a necessary step to contain a problem that should have been addressed from the beginning.
