As viewing habits drift ever further toward social media and digital platforms, television isn’t done yet. Secret Story is a case in point. Between round-the-clock broadcasting, scripted suspense and social media buzz, the show suggests that the small screen still has plenty to win over its audience.
A flagship show that keeps its audience hooked ⏳
Broadcast around the clock for roughly two months, from launch to finale, Secret Story has become a recurring appointment. Available live on channel 89 of the Canal+ pay-TV bouquet, the show banks on a permanent presence on screen, the opposite of the short formats that dominate digital viewing habits.
Its originality seems to be part of the appeal. “My colleagues and I are loyal viewers of Secret Story. It’s an entertainment show that still keeps its originality. Some of the aspects that get shown are real,” says Amina.
For Linda, a journalist, this ability to hold attention deserves recognition: “Honestly, it’s hard for a show to keep an audience engaged every single day for more than 52 minutes. But Secret Story has a knack for it. And despite everything that’s recounted daily, you still have to wait for the evening broadcast on Canal+ Magique to get answers on some of the games. Credit to the production team for making the whole machine run so smoothly.”
Contestants with gripping stories 🎭
Casting is another engagement lever. The unusual backgrounds of some contestants, along with the fame of others, feed the audience’s curiosity. “When I saw Claudio and his ex-partner Morelle on this show, I immediately said I wouldn’t miss a single episode. Especially when you remember how they clashed on social media when they split up,” says Shekina. Personal stories thus become hooks, sometimes well beyond the TV broadcast.
Suspense as the engine of the experience 📡
The game is built on uncovering the contestants’ secrets. Strategies, revelations, challenges and twists keep viewers waiting for more. Truths and controversies alike fuel conversation and sustain interest in the next episodes.
“This show is the embodiment of the science of keeping an audience engaged. It’s a real textbook case showing that television can still hold the attention of a very large audience,” says Martine.
When the small screen moves onto smartphones 📱
Secret Story’s reach is no longer confined to the TV set. On social media, viewers comment on strategies, back their favorite contestants and take part in votes. Other users relay clips and help keep the discussions circulating.
Canal+, for its part, posts excerpts from the contestants’ daily lives and prompts users with questions. This content extends the TV experience onto smartphones and multiplies the chances to interact with the show.
This shift from one screen to another illustrates an evolution in broadcasting strategy: television sets the appointment, while social platforms extend the conversation and the visibility.
Television, a screen far from outdated ✨
With an audience reportedly made up largely of young people, Secret Story highlights a paradox: a generation that is highly present on social media can also stay attached to a TV show. Television, then, isn’t necessarily the opposite of digital; it can lean on it to become more appealing.
Ultimately, the question may no longer be which screen wins the battle for attention, but how media can keep a single story alive across several platforms. In a world where content scrolls by relentlessly on smartphones, the real feat isn’t just catching a glance: it’s giving it a reason to stay.
So, can television still build lasting loyalty among young viewers in the age of TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, or does it now owe its survival to social media? Tell us in the comments.
