Zipline’s performance in Rwanda has been closely observed thanks to a grant from the United States Department of State, amounting to $150 million—approximately 85.27 billion CFA francs. These encouraging results are now pushing the Rwandan government to expand this strategic partnership.

Today, Rwanda stands out as one of the most advanced countries in the world when it comes to deploying Zipline’s delivery system. The country also hosts a testing center for autonomous delivery, further strengthening its position as a true technological laboratory in Africa.

This collaboration dates back to 2016, when Rwanda became the first country in the world to launch a national autonomous drone delivery system. Since then, these technological innovations have significantly improved the efficiency of logistics services—particularly in delivering essential medical products to hard-to-reach areas.

Platform 2: the next generation of smart urban delivery 📡📦

As part of this innovation-driven momentum, Rwanda will also become the first African country to deploy Platform 2 (P2). This next-generation digital infrastructure, developed by Zipline, is designed to optimize urban drone delivery.

The technology aims to enhance the speed, precision, and efficiency of deliveries—especially in areas where nearly 40% of the country’s healthcare needs are concentrated.

Platform 2 has already proven its effectiveness in the United States, where it has enabled the delivery of over 100,000 consumer goods and food items.

With this system, deliveries can now be made directly to homes, office buildings, hotels, and various public spaces. It’s a clear signal of the ongoing transformation in modern urban logistics.

Through these innovations, Zipline continues to demonstrate its ability to reinvent logistics and improve access to essential goods. Meanwhile, Rwanda is steadily positioning itself as Africa’s leader in drone delivery.

Do you think drones could become a common delivery method in major African cities in the coming years? Let us know in the comments.
