Apple’s new Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 chase heart-rate precision ⌚

On September 9, 2026, Apple unveiled its two newest smartwatches: the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. The headline changes are a fully overhauled health sensor system, on-wrist AI, and a record-breaking battery for the Ultra. Two watches, two audiences — mainstream users on one side, endurance athletes and adventurers on the other — but a shared ambition: turning your wrist into the most reliable place to track your health.

One health system, shared across both watches 🫀

This is the real leap forward this generation. Apple redesigned both watches’ optical and electrical sensors from the ground up. Larger, more efficient green LEDs now take heart-rate readings every 5 seconds, all day long — 60 times more frequently than on the previous generation. Heart rate variability (HRV), a key marker of stress and recovery, is now measured every 5 minutes, 24 times more often than before, which is said to help better separate everyday stress from signals worth watching cardiovascularly. Larger electrodes also improve skin contact during ECGs, including mid-workout.

Apple claims this is « the most accurate heart rate detection ever offered on a wearable device » — a claim no independent test has verified yet.

Readiness score: knowing when to push and when to rest 📊

A new metric built from activity, sleep, and vital signs, the Readiness Score is meant to help users gauge recovery before deciding whether to push harder or take it easy. The Health app has been redesigned to surface this data more clearly, in a style reminiscent of what Whoop already offers for this kind of tracking.

AI that runs on the watch, not in the cloud 🧠

Both watches ship with the new S11 chip, described by Apple as the most powerful ever built into an Apple Watch. It enables, for the first time, on-wrist execution of Apple Intelligence. Processing happens largely on-device, thanks to a Neural Engine derived from the A20 Pro chip — which, in theory, limits how much personal data gets sent to Apple’s servers.

Series 12: the everyday watch, built tougher 🏃

The Series 12 keeps the now-familiar Apple Watch design, available in aluminum, titanium, or ceramic. Aluminum models get Ceramic Shield 2, said to be 60% more scratch-resistant than the Ion-X glass on the previous generation; titanium versions move to sapphire crystal. Battery life still tops out at 24 hours of everyday use, but reaches up to 10 hours of outdoor GPS tracking — 25% more than the Series 11. Fast charging sees a real jump too: 12 hours of battery back in just 15 minutes.

Apple justifies keeping the external design unchanged by pointing to how mature the Apple Watch’s shape already is, choosing instead to focus its efforts on sensors and software — which, the company argues, is where differentiation in this market now happens.

Ultra 4: up to 50 hours before you need a charger 🏔️

This is the most dramatic upgrade of the generation. The Ultra 4 keeps its 49mm titanium case, always-on 3,000-nit display, and sapphire crystal, but now reaches 50 hours of battery life in normal use — up from 36 hours on the Ultra 3 — and up to 84 hours in low-power mode. Extended Workout mode allows up to 25 hours of GPS tracking with active heart-rate monitoring; Max Extended Workout stretches that to 45 hours with per-second GPS. Enough to cover an ultra-trail or a long expedition without hunting for an outlet.

What it costs ? 💰

Prices hold steady compared to the previous generation, which Apple attributes to economies of scale. The aluminum Series 12 starts at €449 (roughly 294,600 FCFA), with the Cellular version at €549 (roughly 360,100 FCFA). Titanium models run €799 to €849 depending on size (around 524,000 to 557,000 FCFA), and the ceramic version reaches €1,049 to €1,099 (688,000 to 721,000 FCFA). The Ultra 4 is priced at €899, or roughly 589,700 FCFA.

Preorders open September 9, with in-store availability (outside Cameroon) starting Friday, September 18, 2026.

🌍 The bottom line

Series 12 and Ultra 4 share the same ambition: making the Apple Watch the most precise health tool ever worn on a wrist, without touching its design or its price. For everyday users and endurance athletes alike, the real battle is now fought under the case — in sensors and data processing — more than in looks. What remains to be seen is whether this promised precision holds up in real-world hands, and whether this level of ambition finds a realistic path to Cameroonian wrists.
