Starting December 2025, Algiers’ Houari Boumediene International Airport will roll out artificial intelligence (AI) solutions designed to improve passenger services and align with the standards of the world’s top travel hubs.

The announcement was made on September 14 by Mokhtar Mediouni, CEO of the Société de gestion des services et infrastructures aéroportuaires d’Alger (SGSIA), during a press conference covered by Algérie Presse Service (APS).

Modernization at the Core 🛫

According to Mediouni, this digital transformation aims to enhance passenger experience and streamline operations at Algeria’s main air gateway.

Among the upcoming upgrades:

  • Facial recognition systems,
  • Next-generation body scanners,
  • Smart gates,
  • And fully contactless travel procedures.

These innovations are expected to speed up security checks, simplify administrative steps, and strengthen airport safety overall.

Smoother Flows, Better Comfort 🚶‍♂️🛄

SGSIA explains that AI technologies will also optimize the use of airport spaces—halls, parking areas, and boarding zones—helping to reduce waiting times and ease passenger movement, especially during peak travel periods.

This digital shift is designed to position Algiers as a competitive hub in the region, offering services on par with major international airports.

Building a Regional AI-Driven Hub 🌍

In the long run, the project could boost Algeria’s tourism appeal and economic influence. It may also inspire other airports across the country to embrace digital transformation in air transport.

Once deployed in December, Algiers International will be among the first airports in North Africa to integrate AI in a systematic way—covering both passenger experience and operational management.
