Sharing files between a Windows PC and an Android smartphone is no easy task. Between sharing via links on the Drive or Bluetooth, it’s not always intuitive. But that’s now a thing of the past thanks to Google and its « Nearby Share » feature.

Nearby Share, Android’s AirDrop

To share files with each other, iPhone and Apple device users have a feature called AirDrop. Simple to use, it makes it easy to find devices around you and send them files.
Few people know this, but a similar feature, called « Nearby Share », exists on Android. Regardless of the brand of your Android smartphone, it allows you to find Android smartphones around you and easily send them any file.

Sharing between Android and Windows PCs becomes a reality💻🔁📱

Google has decided to extend this feature to Windows computers. On trial since May this year, « Nearby Share » is now available to all users. As with smartphones, it will now be easier to transfer photos, videos, documents and more from your Android smartphone to your Windows PC and vice versa. To do this, simply download and install the « Nearby Share » application by clicking here on your Windows PC.
Once you’ve installed the application, you’ll need to connect to your Google account. This connection will make your devices visible to your other devices, as well as to your contacts. If necessary, you can also temporarily make your device visible to everyone.

All you need to do is connect to your Google Account. Once you’ve done that, you can start sharing freely between your different devices.
From Windows,
  • Open the « Nearby Share » application or right-click on any file, then click on « Send with Nearby Share ».
  • When the « Nearby Share » application opens, select the device to which you want to send your file.

On your Android smartphone, a window will appear asking you to confirm receipt. Simply accept the request.

If you want to transfer a file from your smartphone to your computer, the procedure is similar:
  • Select a file, then choose the Share option.
  • Select Nearby Share.
  • Choose the device to which you want to share your file, and voilà!
On your computer, a notification should appear confirming receipt. By default, files received go into the « Downloads » folder.

While this is great news, the icing on the cake is the ability to share files between two Windows computers. Yes, you can easily share files between two computers that have this application installed. Google is currently working with partners such as HP to have this application installed by default on their devices.
