Pocket is shutting down: the end of an era for read-it-later apps 🚪

It’s the end of the road for Pocket. After 17 years of helping us save articles for later and declutter our browser tabs, Mozilla is pulling the plug. The announcement came as a shock to millions who relied on the app as their personal digital library. So, why is one of the web’s most beloved tools being retired—and what happens to all your saved content? Here’s what you need to know, minus the nostalgia (well, maybe just a little).

What was Pocket, anyway? 🗂️

Originally launched in 2007 as “Read It Later,” Pocket let you save articles, videos, and links in a clean, distraction-free space to revisit when it suited you. Mozilla acquired it in 2017, integrating it into Firefox and turning it into the go-to tool for read-it-later productivity. With a sleek interface, personalized recommendations, and browser extensions galore, Pocket became indispensable for curious minds, students, and anyone guilty of tab hoarding.

Why is Mozilla shutting Pocket down? Changing habits 📉

According to Mozilla, the way we browse and consume content has evolved. Today’s browsers come with built-in features like tab groups, smarter bookmarks, and AI-powered reading suggestions. Meanwhile, generative AI tools can summarize content or remember what you’ve read. In this changing landscape, Mozilla has decided to sunset Pocket and redirect its efforts toward projects better aligned with modern web habits.

What happens to your saved content? 🗃️

Don’t panic just yet. Pocket will remain functional until July 8, 2025. After that, the app will enter “export mode,” giving you until October 8, 2025 to download your saved content before everything is permanently deleted.

To export your data, head to Pocket’s website, make sure your email address is up to date, and request your archive. You’ll receive a file by email—usually within 24 hours, though it may take longer for large libraries. And yes, check your spam folder.

What about Premium subscribers? 💸

If you’re a Pocket Premium user, Mozilla has you covered. Monthly subscriptions have already been canceled. Annual subscribers will receive automatic prorated refunds based on the time remaining after July 8, 2025. No need to do anything—refunds will be processed using your original payment method.

What are the best Pocket alternatives? 🧭

The read-it-later space isn’t empty. If you’re looking for a replacement, here are a few solid options:

  • Instapaper: Closest to Pocket in spirit, offering a minimalist design and support for Pocket data imports.
  • Raindrop.io: A more versatile tool that handles not just articles, but bookmarks, images, and videos.
  • Omnivore and Wallabag: Popular among open-source fans and heavy readers, both offering import features to make the switch easier.

Pocket might be leaving, but our urge to save, revisit, and rediscover great content isn’t going anywhere. This sunset signals not just the end of a product, but the beginning of more integrated, intelligent ways to consume the web. Mozilla says Pocket’s DNA will live on in future tools. But for now, it’s time to start building your next read-it-later routine.
