Spotify is pushing music personalization to a whole new level. With its new Prompted Playlists feature, Premium subscribers can now steer the algorithm directly and generate hyper-specific playlists just by describing what they want to hear. Think of it as finally being able to tell Spotify: “Here’s the exact vibe I’m looking for — build me a playlist around that.”

Spotify puts the algorithm in your hands 🎯

For the first time, Spotify is letting users guide its recommendation engine instead of simply reacting to it. The feature, called Prompted Playlists, is rolling out in beta to Premium users in New Zealand.

Instead of relying solely on auto-generated sets like Discover Weekly, you can now craft a custom playlist using natural language — a sentence, a mood, a scenario, a precise need. Spotify mixes your prompt with your listening history (from day one on the platform) to generate a tailored selection.

How it actually works🧠

The concept is straightforward: describe what you want, and Spotify turns it into a playlist.​

On mobile, head to your library, tap “Create,” then select Prompted Playlist. From there, you can:​

• Enter a free-form prompt in English (the feature is currently English-only).
• Pick from preset ideas if you’re short on inspiration.
• Set how often the playlist refreshes — daily or weekly — to keep it dynamic.

Some examples of prompts Spotify suggests:

• “Music from my favorite artists from the last five years, focusing on deeper cuts I’ve never heard.”
• “Energetic pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute run, then calmer tracks for cool-down.”
• “Tracks from this year that fit my taste and feel inspired by the most talked-about movie and TV soundtracks.”

A playlist that evolves with you 🎧

What really sets this feature apart is that the playlist isn’t static. You can update your prompt anytime to refine the vibe, and Spotify will regenerate the entire selection based on your new direction.

Each track also comes with a short explanation of why the algorithm picked it, giving you more insight into the engine powering your recommendations — and helping you tweak future prompts. It’s a bit like having a personal DJ who explains their choices and adjusts the mix in real time.
