Google I/O 2025: Gemini just got an upgrade: say hello to Agent Mode 🤖

At Google I/O 2025, the company pulled back the curtain on its most ambitious AI upgrade yet. The spotlight? Gemini — now more than just a voice assistant. With a redesigned interface, vastly improved multimodal understanding, and a game-changing new feature called Agent Mode, Gemini isn’t just responding to your questions — it’s proactively getting things done on your behalf. Google’s conversational AI is stepping into an entirely new league.

Gemini levels up: what’s new — and why it matters 🚀

This is Gemini’s most significant update since its original debut. Google’s AI assistant is now faster, smarter, and more capable of understanding and responding to complex, long-form conversations with a more natural, human-like flow.

The user interface has been overhauled from the ground up. It’s cleaner, more intuitive, and built around fluid, real-time interactions. Animations feel alive — you can literally watch responses unfold as if Gemini is thinking them through in real time. Visuals and text are better integrated, making it easier to track and digest information at a glance.

Multimodal capabilities — already a cornerstone of Gemini — have taken a serious leap forward. It can now process and respond to images, videos, and even audio files in real time. Show it a picture of a dish, and it’ll offer the recipe. Play a song, and it’ll suggest similar tracks. This cross-media intelligence makes Gemini vastly more useful in everyday situations.

Third-party integration also gets a major upgrade. Gemini now connects seamlessly with over 200 popular apps and services, allowing it to handle tasks across your digital ecosystem — no more jumping between different platforms just to get things done.

Agent Mode: your ultra-capable digital assistant is here 🤯

The headline feature this year is Agent Mode, and it’s nothing short of revolutionary. With this mode, Gemini moves beyond conversation to become a true autonomous agent — capable of executing complex tasks based on your goals, not just your commands.

Say, for example, you tell it:
“Find new apartments every week until our lease is up for me and 2 roommates, each with a budget of $1200/month, and in-unit laundry or walking distance to a laundromat”
Gemini will do the searching, organize the listings into a clean table, and even schedule viewings — all autonomously.

What’s especially impressive is Agent Mode’s ability to learn from your habits and preferences. The more you use it, the smarter and more tailored it becomes. Google emphasized transparency and user control: you can always see what the Agent is doing or planning, and step in at any time.

Security was also top of mind. Agent Mode comes with built-in safeguards — including hard limits on financial transactions or data-sharing actions without your explicit approval.

Two new plans to supercharge Gemini 💸

Alongside these new capabilities, Google is rolling out two premium subscriptions to unlock the full potential of its AI ecosystem: Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra.

Google AI Pro is priced at $19.99/month and replaces the former Gemini Advanced plan. It gives users enhanced access to tools like Flow, NotebookLM, and other AI-powered services — all with special features and higher usage limits designed for more demanding workflows.

But the big headline is Google AI Ultra, priced at $249.99/month. This is Google’s top-tier AI experience, offering early access to the company’s most advanced models, including upcoming features like Veo3 and 2.5 Pro Deep Think mode. It’s essentially a VIP pass to cutting-edge AI — built for power users.

Ultra subscribers will also be first in line to try out Agent Mode on desktop, enabling Gemini to manage complex, multi-step tasks with minimal input. A generous 50% discount is available for the first three months (for new users only), though for now, Ultra is only available in the U.S., with global expansion planned.

Gemini is no longer just an assistant — it’s a partner

This evolution marks a turning point. Gemini isn’t just a smarter assistant — it’s becoming a proactive digital companion that can make informed decisions for you. The shift is subtle but profound: AI is moving from being a tool to becoming a partner.

Yes, it raises big questions about trust, privacy, and how much control we’re willing to hand over to machines. But Google seems aware of those stakes — and is betting that the benefits will outweigh the unease.

As AI continues to blur the line between human and machine, transparency might be our last true anchor. Here’s hoping Google holds that line.
