The Douala Tech Park, inaugurated on October 31, 2024, at the JFN Hightech University Institute campus, aims to train 10,000 African talents by 2030. Supported by Google Cloud, AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Dassault Systèmes, this project represents a transformative step in Douala’s journey to becoming a technology innovation hub and boosting Africa’s digital economy.

A continental ambition for african innovation 🌍

Located in Cameroon’s economic capital, the Douala Tech Park aims to meet Africa’s growing need for technological skills and innovation. In his inaugural speech, Alphonse Nafack, president of JFN Hightech University Institute, emphasized that this project goes beyond being a mere tech center. It aspires to revolutionize Africa’s digital ecosystem by training local talents capable of developing solutions tailored to the continent’s challenges. According to Mr. Nafack, the goal is to train 10,000 young Africans by 2030, providing them with high-quality education in emerging technologies.

A strategic partnership with tech giants 💼

The inauguration of the Douala Tech Park brought together representatives from Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Dassault Systèmes, all committed to developing Africa’s tech ecosystem. These companies will provide infrastructure, educational resources, and access to their platforms for training. Frédéric Douphy, a representative from Dassault Systèmes, stated: “Education is the pathway to innovation and industry. We believe this partnership will foster Africa’s technological autonomy.” This support is designed to integrate Cameroon and Africa into the global tech value chain.

The Douala Tech Park is not limited to providing office space for startups. It aims to become a skills incubator, a place where young talents acquire knowledge in artificial intelligence, big data, cybersecurity, and software engineering. Alphonse Nafack highlighted that the initiative is already yielding results, citing the example of three JFN students selected by NASA for the ART 2024 program. This international recognition illustrates the quality of education provided and the potential impact of Douala Tech Park on the global stage.

A vision for Cameroon’s economic future✨

Professor Magloire Ondoua, a representative of the Minister of Higher Education, praised the president of JFN for this initiative and assured the support of Cameroonian authorities. According to him, the Douala Tech Park is an opportunity to create jobs and promote local growth: “This infrastructure will allow Cameroon to retain its talents by offering opportunities here. It is an effective way to create wealth without requiring significant foreign investment.” By creating a thriving tech ecosystem, the Douala Tech Park aims to generate African solutions for African challenges, strengthening local competitiveness.

Addressing Africa’s digital challenges 📈

Despite its ambitions, the Douala Tech Park must face the challenges of inclusive digital transformation. Limited internet access and digital inequality remain significant obstacles in certain parts of Cameroon. To address this, the park plans to collaborate with the government to improve digital infrastructure, particularly in rural areas. Additionally, programs introducing digital tools will be launched to familiarize young people with advanced technologies, which will help bridge the digital divide.

A promising future for Cameroon and Africa 🕊️

As both a skills incubator and an innovation catalyst, the Douala Tech Park also seeks to encourage “Made in Cameroon” by integrating technology into local businesses and public institutions. Alphonse Nafack concluded: “We want to build a knowledge industry, moving from a raw material-based economy to an innovation-driven economy.” By combining technological development and economic autonomy, the Douala Tech Park aims to transform African youth into a driving force of global innovation while creating lasting value for Cameroon and the African continent.
