In a competitive telecommunications market, Camtel is seeking solutions to improve its network coverage. On December 5, 2024, the public operator signed a partnership with Orange Cameroon. This agreement aims to share their mobile networks, with the goal of quickly addressing coverage gaps. This initiative comes as Camtel struggles to compete with MTN and Orange, which have dominated the market for years.

A partnership to fill coverage gaps 📡

Camtel faces challenges against MTN and Orange, which have 10.5 million and 8.7 million subscribers, respectively. In comparison, the public operator has only 692,301 subscribers, representing less than 5% of the market share. To catch up, Camtel is relying on roaming agreements. Following a deal with MTN in 2022, the operator is now collaborating with Orange Cameroon.

This partnership will temporarily enhance Camtel’s coverage in underserved areas. According to Gilbert Ngono, Director of Strategy, it provides valuable time while Camtel continues deploying its own infrastructure. This support is critical to attracting new subscribers.

By leveraging Orange’s network, Camtel is strengthening its presence in rural areas. This approach is vital for expanding its services and modernizing its network.

Ambitions for growth and service diversification 📱

Camtel aims to capture 10% of the market share by 2026. This is an ambitious goal, but the company remains confident. To achieve it, Camtel plans to expand its network and diversify its offerings.

Among its projects is the launch of Blue Money, scheduled for 2025 (click here to learn more). This mobile money service will target unbanked populations, competing with the well-established MTN Mobile Money and Orange Money.

However, Camtel hopes to attract a new customer base, focusing on rural areas and young people. The goal is to promote financial inclusion through accessible services for all.

A necessary digital transformation🌐

Camtel and Orange aim to modernize Cameroon’s digital ecosystem. Better connectivity is essential to support economic growth and reduce the digital divide.

By facilitating internet access, Camtel plays a key role in the country’s digital transformation. Nevertheless, challenges remain. The company must invest more in its infrastructure and services. This partnership, however, demonstrates Camtel’s commitment to innovation and adapting to market needs.

Competitiveness in telecommunications 📊

The telecommunications market in Cameroon is dominated by MTN and Orange, which have extensive networks and millions of subscribers. As a public operator, Camtel seeks to establish its presence.

Improving network coverage and digital services is crucial. Access to the internet and mobile money is a priority for vulnerable populations. This partnership with Orange could mark a turning point for Camtel.
