The visit of the Supreme Pontiff to Cameroon did not go unnoticed. Beyond the symbolism, it carried a powerful message—one that resonates with today’s rapidly evolving world.

At the Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC), Pope Leo XIV addressed the academic community with a speech that placed a now critical issue front and center: education in artificial intelligence.

Caught between fascination and caution, his remarks both challenge and provoke reflection. TechGriot takes a deeper look at what this intervention means.

AI is already part of everyday life 🌍💻

Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept. It is now embedded in daily practices, particularly within academic environments.

From automated data processing to writing assistance, AI tools are multiplying and reshaping how work gets done. The reality is clear: the question is no longer whether we should adopt AI, but how we adapt to it intelligently.

Pope Leo XIV emphasized “the urgent need to train human resources,” warning of the lag that societies risk if they neglect this learning curve.

This concern reflects current realities. According to estimates cited by various media outlets, “between 50% and 60% of urban students in Yaoundé, Douala, and Buea already use artificial intelligence tools.”

A significant figure—yet one limited to just three major cities out of Cameroon’s ten regions. The true scale of adoption may be far broader.

A powerful tool that demands responsibility ⚖️🧠

While acknowledging the opportunities AI offers, the Pope also warned against its potential abuses. His message is not one of rejection, but of mindful and ethical use.

“Behind artificial intelligence, there are fundamentally harmful individual intentions,” he noted, pointing to risks such as manipulation, misinformation, and the misuse of data.

This warning is particularly relevant in a context where students—among the primary users of these tools—are also the most exposed to their effects.

AI can be a catalyst for excellence, improving access to knowledge and accelerating research. But when misused, it can undermine intellectual integrity and academic rigor.

The real challenge lies in striking a balance between technological performance and human responsibility.

Between progress and drift: the risk of dehumanization ⚠️👤

Beyond technical and ethical concerns, Pope Leo XIV raised a deeper issue: the potential weakening of human intellectual capacity.

By automating certain cognitive tasks, AI could foster dependency—or even intellectual laziness. Young researchers, drawn to speed and efficiency, may gradually abandon critical thinking and personal analysis.

The Pope also spoke of a “devaluation and distortion of the human person.” A strong expression, reflecting fears of a gradual shift toward a society where machines overshadow human thought.

In this context, education becomes the primary safeguard. Teaching AI is not just about learning how to use it—it is about understanding its limits, its biases, and its broader implications.

Train to adapt, not to depend 🎓🚀

Ultimately, Pope Leo XIV’s address at UCAC calls for collective responsibility. Artificial intelligence is neither inherently good nor bad—it all depends on how it is used.

For Cameroonian universities, the challenge is clear: fully integrate AI into curricula while simultaneously strengthening students’ critical thinking skills.

This technological shift demands a rapid transformation of educational systems. It also calls for a broader reflection on the role of humans in an increasingly automated world.

While AI is transforming methods, it must never replace human judgment, creativity, and reflection.

At its core, the question raised goes far beyond academia: are we training a generation capable of mastering AI—or one that will become dependent on it?
