The Canal Olympia Yaoundé 1 entertainment complex was officially handed over on April 3, 2025. Now under the management of the University of Yaoundé 1, it is positioning itself as a technological hub that can strengthen teaching and research in the fields of digital technology, art, multimedia, and creative industries.

Cutting-Edge Equipment Serving Students 🎓

With its high-definition screening room, advanced sound system, and multimedia infrastructure, Canal Olympia Yaoundé 1 offers unprecedented possibilities. This 300-seat venue enables experimentation with state-of-the-art capture and broadcasting technologies, paving the way for immersive projects. It also serves as an HD cinema space where students and the university community come to enjoy entertainment.

The university could integrate modules in digital post-production, 3D content creation, and augmented reality simulation—skills that are essential for the future of both cultural and scientific industries.

Toward an AI Experimentation Hub 🤖

The acquisition of Canal Olympia Yaoundé 1 could also evolve into an experimentation platform for artificial intelligence applied to video and audio. Automated content analysis, automatic subtitling, and speech synthesis are among the possible uses for researchers and students in digital arts.

This infrastructure could also host hackathons and workshops on AI and immersive technologies, further encouraging innovation and the development of local solutions.

“This is a space where our students will be able to develop their skills. Beyond entertainment, it will also be used for hands-on learning and various university ceremonies. Legally, Canal Olympia now belongs to the University, but its operational management remains under Canal+,” said Minister of Higher Education Jacques Fame Ndongo.

A Catalyst for Training and the Local Digital Industry 🚀

The integration of Canal Olympia into the university ecosystem opens up exciting prospects for professional training and skills transfer. The space could become a true lab for tech start-ups—particularly those focused on audiovisual production, gaming, and digital media.

By embracing this technological tool, the University of Yaoundé 1 is asserting itself as a major player in digital education in Cameroon. The institution is equipping its students with the tools and knowledge for the jobs of the future.

It is worth noting that movie screenings remain managed by Canal+. Anyone wishing to enjoy a film can still follow the theater’s regular programming. The venue has a Facebook page where weekly schedules and ticket prices are shared.
