In 2022, LastPass, one of the most popular password managers, suffered a massive hacking incident. Two years later, the repercussions are still being felt. The latest wave of attacks has allowed hackers to siphon approximately $5.3 million (or €5.1 million) in cryptocurrencies. This heist follows several similar breaches linked to data stolen during the same hacking event.
Millions stolen 💸
According to ZachXBT, a blockchain specialist, the hackers exploited the stolen data to access the crypto wallets of certain victims. Once the private keys were in their possession, the cybercriminals transferred the assets, primarily in Ethereum and Bitcoin. Despite the transparency of the blockchain, these transactions make the funds nearly impossible to recover.
While LastPass is under scrutiny, the company defends itself. Its security chief claims there is no direct evidence linking these recent thefts to the 2022 hack. However, the attacks continue to pile up: $4.4 million stolen in 2023, $6.6 million in February 2024, and now $5.3 million. Cybersecurity experts advise staying cautious.
Protect yourself now 🔒
The advice from experts is clear: if you’ve used LastPass to store sensitive information, act immediately. Change your passwords and transfer your cryptocurrencies to hardware wallets, such as Ledger or Trezor. “Better safe than sorry,” reminds ZachXBT, and he’s right.
This latest episode underscores the importance of diversifying your security solutions. No system is invulnerable, and putting all your eggs in one basket remains risky. Whether you’re a crypto investor or simply concerned about protecting your data, always consider adopting enhanced security practices.
