The United Arab Emirates has officially kicked off its National 6G Initiative, led by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). The announcement came during the first meeting of the National 6G Committee, which brings together federal and local institutions, telecom operators, universities, research centers, and global tech companies.

Paving the way for the next generation of connectivity 🚀

According to Eng. Mohammed Al Ramsi, Deputy Director-General of the Telecommunications Sector at the TDRA, this initiative continues the UAE’s long-term strategy to anticipate and lead major technological transitions.

“Today, we’re proud to have more than 99.5% population coverage, powered by over 23,000 5G sites serving more than 10 million subscribers,” said Al Ramsi.

Those achievements, he added, pave the way for a new era of connectivity — one that will see the UAE and its partners develop a national 6G roadmap integrating artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and satellite networks to power the technologies of tomorrow.

But the shift to 6G isn’t just a technical evolution. For the UAE, it’s also a strategic step toward building a sustainable knowledge economy, driven by innovation and the integration of advanced digital infrastructure across every sector.

Research, innovation, and technical standards 🧠

The 6G Committee will coordinate national efforts around research and development, standardization, spectrum planning, and regulatory readiness — all aimed at ensuring the country is ready to roll out next-generation networks. The initiative also seeks to boost adoption of emerging technologies across key industries such as energy, healthcare, logistics, and education.

Two specialized subcommittees have been formed:

  • Dr. Marwan Dabbah from Khalifa University will lead the Research and Development Task Group.
  • Dr. Khaled Al Awadhi from the TDRA will head the Integration and Strategic Partnerships Group.

As a national coordination platform, the 6G Committee’s mission is to align research, regulation, and deployment planning — reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to prepare for the post-5G era and cement its position among the world’s leaders in advanced communication technologies.

Having been the first in the region and fourth globally to launch a 5G network back in 2021, the UAE is once again pushing boundaries. Its 6G strategy combines technological innovation, digital sovereignty, and sustainable development — a clear signal that the country intends to shape the future of connectivity.
