A technical failure during the live broadcast of the papal speech has sparked a heated controversy between CRTV and Camtel, amid public outrage and official statements.

A technical failure that divides responsibility 🔧

It all began live from the Presidency of the Republic. During the respective speeches of the President of the Republic, Paul Biya, and the Sovereign Pontiff, Leon XIV, viewers witnessed a sudden signal interruption. For several minutes, silence took over the broadcast, abruptly cutting off the pope’s speech.

Very quickly, the question of what caused the outage entered the public debate, setting CRTV and Camtel against each other with conflicting explanations.

A wave of outrage on social media 🌐

The incident did not go unnoticed. On social media, reactions poured in. Many Cameroonians expressed frustration at what they saw as a major failure during an event of international significance.

“After ENEO, now CRTV,”

“It’s unfortunate what just happened in front of the world,” and “This is not good,” read some of the comments.

Some users even shared screenshots of the frozen broadcast as a form of protest. Journalists and private media executives also reacted, condemning an incident that tarnishes the country’s image.

CRTV responds swiftly 📢

Amid the controversy, CRTV’s Director General, Charles Ndongo, issued a statement on April 15. He offered “sincere apologies to all viewers” and cited “fiber optic unavailability and instability in the internet network” as the cause of the disruption.

The head of the national broadcaster, however, reassured the public that services had returned to “normal operation” after the incident. His statement implicitly pointed fingers at the operator responsible for internet infrastructure in Cameroon.

Camtel pushes back and fires back 🛰

The response was immediate. In a statement released on April 16, Camtel’s Director General, Judith Yah Sunday, rejected any responsibility.

According to her, “the technical interruption stems from technological choices made by CRTV,” adding that the national broadcaster “did not use Camtel’s network as its primary broadcast source.”

She also criticized what she described as a “premature public accusation” and expressed openness to a joint audit with public authorities and CRTV to establish the facts.

Broadcast continues despite the incident 📡

Despite the disruption, media coverage of the papal visit continues. Pope Leon XIV arrived this morning in Bamenda, where the broadcast of his activities has proceeded without major interruptions.

Still, the episode has reignited debates about the reliability of technical infrastructure and coordination between public actors during major national and international events.

Do you think this was just a technical glitch, or does it reveal deeper flaws in the management of official broadcasts in Cameroon?
