Cameroon is betting on artificial intelligence to reshape secondary education, with a striking pitch: hundreds of teaching resources built in weeks, at almost no cost.
A number worth a second look 💰
At a strategic conference held on August 17, 2026, at the AI Distance Learning Centre (AIDL), Cameroon’s Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) revealed a striking figure: more than 250 bilingual teaching simulations were designed in under a month using AI, at almost no cost to the administration. According to Muluh Godson, National Pedagogical Inspector for Computer Science, who presented the data, some international academic institutions reportedly spend far more to produce a much smaller number of simulations — a comparison that, if accurate, would illustrate just how disruptive generative AI could be for education systems working with tight budgets. TechGriot wasn’t able to independently verify the figures these international institutions are said to spend, so this comparison is worth reading with some caution.
Labs you couldn’t build in real life 🧪
The value of these simulations goes beyond saving money. They let students virtually run experiments schools could never organize in person: combustion reactions, sensitive chemical processes, antibiograms, or other hands-on tasks considered too risky for a classroom. Teachers of chemistry, biology, arts and literature, and industrial techniques demonstrated the modules, each paired with a teaching guide. The bilingual format was built to run offline, a deliberate choice in a country where internet access still varies sharply by region.
A push toward a fairer school system 🌍
Inspector General Adjaba Biwoli Jean Pierre, who opened the proceedings, said these resources strengthen teaching quality, including in high schools without physical labs. Minister Nalova Lyonga went further, framing the initiative as part of a broader goal: turning AI into a tool that levels the playing field between well-equipped urban schools and areas with fewer scientific facilities.
Keeping people in charge ⚖️
Minister Lyonga tempered the enthusiasm, though, reminding attendees that AI should remain a tool in teachers’ hands, not a replacement for them. She stressed the need for a structured, deliberate approach — particularly around prompting skills — so students become creators of content rather than passive consumers of technology.
By betting on fast, low-cost AI content production, MINESEC is testing a model that could inspire other African ministries facing similar budget constraints. Whether these resources get properly maintained and updated over time remains an open question.
