Don’t expect a design overhaul here. This generation is built on internal upgrades: a variable aperture camera, a first for Apple, a 2nm A20 Pro chip, and record-breaking battery life. But the real headline of the night wasn’t either Pro model — it was the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable. Here’s everything worth knowing about the phones redefining what « Pro » means at Apple.

A keynote defined by technological maturity 🎯

This year, Apple made a deliberate call: no standard iPhone 18. Only the Pro and Pro Max models were on stage; the mainstream phone, along with an iPhone 18e and an iPhone Air 2, is reportedly being held back until spring 2027. That’s a first for Apple, which has never split its lineup this way before — and it points to a clearer segmentation strategy: premium hardware gets its own moment in September, while the entry and mid-tier models wait for a separate launch window.

There’s also a competitive backdrop worth noting. Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi have offered variable apertures and foldable displays for years. Apple, often criticized for lagging on both fronts, is answering with its own take — folded into a tightly integrated, optimized ecosystem rather than a rushed catch-up.

Design: refinement, not reinvention 🎨

Visually, the iPhone 18 Pro doesn’t rewrite the playbook. The forged titanium frame introduced last year sticks around. The changes are subtle: a slightly smaller Dynamic Island freeing up a bit more screen real estate, and four finishes — Deep Black, Silver, Glacier, and a standout Bordeaux that’s shaping up to be this year’s signature color.

Dimensions barely move: 6.3 inches for the Pro, 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. Both use the same bright Super Retina XDR OLED displays with adaptive ProMotion up to 120Hz. In hand, it still feels like a premium object — dense, but well-balanced.

Camera: variable aperture, finally 📸

This is the headline feature. For the first time on an iPhone, the 48MP Fusion main sensor gets a mechanical variable aperture, with a six-blade, laser-cut diaphragm offering four settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0.

Why this particular design? Apple says ƒ/1.48 was chosen as the sweet spot between brightness and depth of field. In low light, the widest setting lets in up to 50% more light. In daylight or for landscapes, a narrower aperture sharpens detail across the whole frame.

Photographers get manual control through the new Pro Controls panel — shutter speed, white balance, histogram — built directly into the Camera app, alongside Photographic Styles 3 for fine-tuning texture and grain. On video, Cinematic mode can now be applied after the fact, even on footage shot at up to 60fps.

The full setup pairs that main sensor with two more 48MP Fusion cameras: an ultra-wide (ƒ/2.2, with 0.5x macro) and a telephoto (ƒ/2.8) that Apple credits with up to 8x optical-quality zoom — 4x and 8x optical combined across the 100/200mm range. Apple is also leaning on Apple Reference Image, a digital signature meant to authenticate photos and push back against the flood of AI-generated images.

Performance: the A20 Pro’s 2nm debut 🚀

Under the hood, the iPhone 18 Pro runs the new A20 Pro, built on TSMC’s 2nm process — a first for an iPhone, following the recent Apple M6. The chip packs a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU, and a doubled 32-core Neural Engine, with Apple claiming up to 40% faster sustained performance over the A19 Pro. The stated goal: run Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI natively on-device.

To keep things cool, Apple tripled the size of the vapor chamber, aiming to hold performance steady through heavy gaming sessions or demanding AI workloads.

Battery: the biggest jump in iPhone history 🔋

Apple is calling this its largest generational battery gain ever. The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours of video playback, and the Pro Max up to 43 hours — six hours more than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Under typical daily use, Apple says the Pro Max can go up to 29 hours per charge.

Charging speed got a boost too: 50% in 15 minutes, and up to 7 hours of video playback from just 5 minutes on the charger. Good news for anyone living out of their carry-on.

Fair question: there’s no standard iPhone 18 this year. Apple chose to put its weight behind the Pro models and the iPhone Duo, its first foldable. The regular iPhone 18 is reportedly slated for 2027.

The absence lines up with a simplified tiering strategy: the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air cover the mainstream, the 18 Pro and Pro Max target power users, and the Duo goes after early adopters willing to pay a premium. Whether that split becomes Apple’s new normal or stays a one-off tied to current industry pressures remains to be seen.

The real story: the iPhone Duo ✨

As strong as the Pro lineup is, the night’s real headline act was the iPhone Duo. With a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch cover screen, it folds shut like a book — closed, it fits in a pocket; open, it works like a compact tablet. Apple says it waited for hinge and foldable-display technology to reach a level of maturity it was comfortable shipping, with a patented mechanism and a crease-free display. Pricing starts at $2,499 for 256GB, up to roughly $4,199 for 2TB, with preorders opening October 16 and availability from October 23, 2026.

Pricing and availability: the bill goes up, and Apple explains why 💶

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, and the Pro Max at $1,299 — a $100 jump over last year’s models. The 2TB tier is reportedly priced around $3,229, per several converging reports, though that figure isn’t yet confirmed on Apple’s official pricing page.

That increase isn’t arbitrary: Apple points to a global memory shortage (RAM and storage), with chipmakers reportedly redirecting a large share of production toward the DRAM feeding AI data centers. It’s a plausible explanation given the current state of the industry — though it won’t make the bill any lighter for buyers.
