After years of anticipation, the Gmail update for iPhone and iPad is finally here. Google has chosen to align the iOS experience with that of Android and the web, rolling out a visual redesign based on its Material Design 3 standard. This essentially visual change aims to offer a more modern, smoother, and enjoyable interface. Let’s take a look at what’s new and how it changes the experience for Apple mobile users.
A new look for Gmail on iPhone and iPad 📨
Starting this week, Gmail on iOS adopts Material Design 3—also known as Material You. The interface now features more rounded buttons, more spacious text areas, and stronger contrasts to better highlight interactive elements. The whole layout is designed to improve readability without disrupting the familiar navigation logic users are accustomed to.
This design update mainly aims to create consistency across all platforms. Whether you use Gmail on Android, the web, or iOS, the visual experience and interface markers now feel unified. Google says the rollout will be complete within the next two weeks via a simple app update.
Gemini expands its features on mobile ⚡
Google is also using this update as an opportunity to enhance its integrated tools. On both iOS and Android, Gemini—its AI-powered assistant—now lets Business, Enterprise, and Google One AI Premium subscribers generate images directly from the sidebar.
These images can be copied, saved, or inserted into email drafts, unlocking new creative possibilities without leaving the app. This evolution aligns with Google’s broader ambition to integrate more AI into its professional tools.
Small but handy improvements in other apps ⚙️
Alongside Gmail’s revamp, other Google apps are also getting updates on iOS. Google Calendar now lets users create and edit “birthday” events—an option that was previously missing compared to Android.
On Android devices, Gmail and Google Chat now allow users to adjust the width between the conversation list and the reading window. It may be a small detail, but it greatly improves display customization based on individual preferences.
