Google has unveiled the long-awaited successor to the Pixel 7a, with the launch of the Pixel 8a. This new model takes up the aesthetic codes of the Pixel 8, while retaining its strong points, all offered at an affordable price.

The Google Pixel 8’s false twin 😍

The Pixel 8a continues the elegant design of the Pixel 8, with its rounded edges and slim photo module. The back of the smartphone is made of matte plastic, giving it a better grip and reducing fingerprints.

In terms of security, it offers an under-screen biometric sensor as well as 2D facial recognition. It should be noted that the latter is less secure than a fingerprint reader.

AI to help you every day ✨

The Pixel 8a also incorporates Gemini Nano, the lighter version of Google’s in-house language. It enables access to offline functionalities such as web page summaries. Although Gemini Nano will not be available from the launch of the Pixel 8a, it will be included in a future update.

The Pixel 8a also comes with a number of AI features:

  • « Call Screen » to block unwanted calls.
  • « Direct My Call » option to choose the call path via a menu during automated calls.
  • « Hold for Me » function, which waits for you during a call on hold and informs you when the call is established.
  • « Clear Calling », which improves audio quality by reducing background noise.
  • « Circle to search » function, which lets you launch a search by selecting an area of the screen.

Photography still has an important place 📸

Hardware-wise, the Pixel 8a reuses the sensors of its predecessor, the Pixel 7a. There’s a 64-megapixel main sensor and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor. Compared to the Pixel 8, the depth sensor is absent, but Google’s super-zoom, offering up to x8 digital zoom, is still present.

On the front, a 13-megapixel sensor is centered on the screen. It offers an ultra-wide-angle viewing angle, albeit slightly narrower than that of the rear camera.

As with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the Pixel 8a benefits from a new icon for assisted retouching in Google’s Photos app. It gives access to features such as « Magic Editor » to reposition and resize subjects, « Magic Eraser » to remove unwanted elements, and many others.

Google Tensor 3, 120Hz display, wireless charging 💪🏾

The Pixel 8a is powered by Google’s Tensor G3 chip. It is backed by 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage space. Its 6.1-inch OLED screen offers Full HD+ definition and a 120 Hz refresh rate. This new screen allows access to the Always-On mode, keeping the screen permanently on.

As for autonomy, the Pixel 8a is equipped with a 4492 mAh battery, offering up to 24 hours of mixed use. What’s more, it is now compatible with wireless charging.

Google is offering the Pixel 8a with a 7-year software update and security guarantee. It is aligned with that of the top-of-the-range models in the Pixel range.

Price and availability 🤑

The Pixel 8a will be available on May 14, 2024, in four colors: Volcanic Black, Porcelain, Aloe Green and Azure Blue. The latter is exclusive to the Google Store.

The 128 GB model will be available for 549 euros. The 256GB version will cost 609 euros.
