TikTok to limit access to beauty filters for minors 💄

TikTok continues to dominate the social media landscape, but concerns about the psychological effects of its beauty filters are growing. To address these issues, the Chinese platform has announced restrictions on access to appearance-altering filters for underage users. This decision will take effect by the end of 2024.

Popular but controversial filters ✨

Beauty filters, which can slim the face, smooth the skin, or enhance brightness, are often used by content creators to correct perceived imperfections. These features, designed to enhance appearance, have quickly gained popularity. However, they have also sparked significant criticism.

By distorting reality, these filters contribute to the creation of an idealized and unattainable image, particularly for younger users. Recent studies have shown that these virtual transformations can lead to deep dissatisfaction, frustration, and, in some cases, psychological disorders like body dysmorphia.

Nikki Soo, TikTok Europe’s Head of Safety and Well-being Public Policy, sounded the alarm at a recent forum:

« Our study with young people and their parents shows that certain appearance-modifying filters can negatively impact adolescents’ well-being. »

Age-based regulation 🛡️

In response, TikTok has developed a system to categorize filters based on user age. Starting late 2024, beauty filters will only be available to users aged 18 and older.

For minors, the platform plans to display a warning message when videos containing these filters are viewed. This message will clarify that the author’s appearance has been altered using a filter. TikTok aims to promote a healthy relationship with self-image.

« Filter effects are not intended to change how you perceive yourself. We encourage you to appreciate the unique aspects of your beauty, » explains Nikki Soo.

However, questions remain about the real effectiveness of this measure. As BFMTV highlighted, it is relatively easy for minors to bypass these restrictions by lying about their age during registration.

The impact of filters on mental health 💔

The link between beauty filters and young people’s mental health is at the heart of the debate. In 2023, researchers from Boston University raised the alarm, denouncing the destructive effect of these filters on self-perception. They noted how this contributes to the rise in cases of body dysmorphia, a disorder affecting nearly 2% of the global population.

Body dysmorphia leads individuals to obsess over imagined or exaggerated physical flaws. This mindset impacts their self-esteem and quality of life. Among teenagers, this disorder is often worsened by constant comparisons to unrealistic standards portrayed on social media.

A step toward limiting harm 🚸

With this initiative, TikTok aligns itself with a broader trend of making digital platforms safer for young users. By limiting access to beauty filters, the platform aims to reduce social pressures related to appearance and promote more authentic self-representation.

However, this move does not completely solve the problem. Even if minors can no longer use these filters, they will still be exposed to content created by adults. Additionally, while warning messages are helpful, they may have a limited impact given the overwhelming presence of modified content.

Is this measure enough ? 🤔

TikTok’s decision raises broader questions about the responsibility of social media platforms in protecting their users. Beyond filters, the entire social media model—centered on appearance and validation—could come under scrutiny.

Experts suggest more comprehensive solutions, such as digital education and stricter content regulation. Parents, educators, and institutions also have a role to play in raising awareness among young people.

As TikTok works to address criticism, this measure could inspire other platforms. However, to ensure meaningful change, collaboration between tech giants, governments, and civil society will be essential.
