Office AC wars : why shared thermostats keep starting fights ❄️

In shared offices, air conditioning has become far more than a simple appliance for cooling a room. It’s often a genuine point of contention among coworkers. Too cold for some, too warm for others — the thermostat can quickly turn into a flashpoint. But behind this everyday friction lies a real technological question: how do you run a shared cooling system that keeps everyone comfortable without driving up the electricity bill?

When the thermostat becomes the office referee 🌡️

The scenario plays out the same way almost everywhere. One employee feels the heat and switches on the AC. A few minutes later, the coworker at the next desk complains about the cold. The setting gets changed again, until someone else asks for yet another adjustment.

Some prefer 17, 18 or 19°C (around 63–66°F), while others swear by 23 or 24°C (73–75°F). For Firmin, there shouldn’t even be a debate:

The root issue is that a single thermostat usually controls the temperature for a whole room full of people. But how warm or cold someone feels depends on the individual — their activity level, clothing, where they’re sitting, and how close they are to the air vent.

From basic AC unit to smart cooling 🤖

Technology now offers far more sophisticated options than manually turning a dial. Modern air conditioners can pack in electronic thermostats, temperature and humidity sensors, timers, eco modes, and automatic regulation systems.

Some devices go further with the Internet of Things (IoT): connected sensors relay real-time data on ambient conditions to a central system, which then automatically adjusts how the AC unit runs.

In a lightly occupied office, the system can scale back its output. When more people are around, it can gradually ramp up the cooling instead.

That kind of automation shifts the whole dynamic — from « who’s grabbing the remote now? » to a system that manages thermal comfort intelligently on its own.

23 or 24°C: the tech-and-energy compromise ⚡

In shared offices, settling around 23 or 24°C (73–75°F) tends to work as an acceptable middle ground. « At that level, it’s neither too cool nor too warm — everyone seems satisfied, » Béatrice says, still amused by the ongoing office debate.

But picking a temperature isn’t just about comfort — it directly affects power consumption. The bigger the gap between the outdoor temperature and the target setting, the harder the system has to work to hold that line.

Air conditioners built with Inverter technology let the compressor continuously adjust its output to match actual demand, rather than running flat-out or shutting off entirely. That modulation can meaningfully improve energy efficiency under the right conditions.

Sensors that cut down on waste 📡

The most interesting shift, though, is toward systems that make decisions based on data. Occupancy sensors detect whether a room is actually in use. Temperature sensors track thermal swings, and some setups also factor in humidity readings.

Linked to a building management system, this equipment can automate several tasks at once: turning the AC on or off, adjusting the temperature, scheduling around working hours, or dialing back cooling in empty rooms.

Air conditioning starts to look less like an appliance and more like a full cyber-physical system — sensors, software, and electrical equipment working together, using data to make decisions on their own.

Will AI eventually run the office ?🧠

Artificial intelligence could push this automation even further. By analyzing occupancy patterns, outdoor temperatures, and past consumption data, a smart system could anticipate what’s needed instead of simply reacting after the fact.

The real challenge will be striking a balance between human comfort, energy efficiency, and automation.

Next time a fight breaks out over the remote, the answer might not be choosing between 18 and 24°C anymore. It could come down to a system that measures, analyzes, and adjusts the temperature on its own.
