ChatGPT drops below 50% for the first time — and Gemini is gaining fast 🤖

ChatGPT’s unchallenged run has hit its first real wall. For the first time, OpenAI’s assistant has fallen below the 50% market share mark, settling at 46.4%, while Gemini continues its steady climb to 27.7%. The shift arrives amid heightened tension — driven in part by a user exodus following OpenAI’s controversial agreement with the Department of War.

ChatGPT, the fragile leader 📉

On paper, ChatGPT remains the undisputed number one, with more than 1.1 billion claimed monthly active users. But that headline number obscures a real erosion. According to data published by Sensor Tower in May 2026, the app now holds just 46.4% of the generative AI market, down significantly from where it stood just months ago. Gemini, meanwhile, has been gaining ground consistently and has now established itself as the most credible challenger to emerge since ChatGPT’s launch.

A deal that’s costing OpenAI users ⚠️

The decline isn’t purely about competitive dynamics. It also traces back to OpenAI’s agreement with the Department of War — seen by many users as a fundamental betrayal of the ethical commitments the company had long maintained, including a standing prohibition on military applications of its technology. A significant number of users chose to uninstall the app, viewing the deal as a break with the principles that had drawn them to the platform. For many, OpenAI’s stated safeguards don’t hold up: the agreement has become an additional source of concern, and one that is increasingly weighing on ChatGPT’s public image.

Gemini, riding the Google ecosystem 🚀

Google hasn’t needed to reinvent anything to gain ground. Gemini benefits directly from the pull of an ecosystem already woven into billions of people’s daily routines — Android, Search, Workspace, Health, and several other services now integrate Google’s AI natively. That diffuse but constant presence allows Gemini to reach users without having to pitch them one by one, simply by making itself indispensable wherever the habits already exist. Observers are now watching to see whether ChatGPT can reverse course before that structural advantage becomes a settled habit.
