View once for text messages is coming to WhatsApp, with some real caveats 😶‍🌫️

WhatsApp keeps tinkering with its most carefully guarded space: the private conversation. After photos, videos, and voice messages, the app is reportedly preparing a new view-once option for text messages on iOS — with a straightforward premise: one message, one read, then gone.

A familiar feature, now extended to text ✍🏾

The logic isn’t new. WhatsApp already offers view once for photos, videos, and voice messages. According to the app’s official FAQ, this content disappears after it’s been opened and can’t be replayed within the app — though some limitations around saving and reporting already exist.

What’s new here is the extension of that principle to plain text. Based on elements spotted in an iOS beta, the option would reportedly be activated at the moment of sending, via a long press on the send button, followed by something along the lines of a « send as view once » choice.

What this changes in practice 🔒

On paper, the use case is clear: one-time pieces of information — an address, a code, a sensitive detail, or simply a message you don’t want lingering in a conversation history. Once it’s served its purpose, it’s gone.

WhatsApp is also reportedly planning to lock the feature down further by preventing copying, forwarding, sharing, and — based on early tested versions — screenshots and screen recordings. That’s consistent with the feature’s core philosophy, even if no system of this kind is entirely foolproof.

A useful feature, but not a magic fix ⚠️

This is where the conversation gets more interesting. Automatic deletion creates a strong impression of control — but it doesn’t eliminate all risk. WhatsApp’s own FAQ already acknowledges that recipients can sometimes work around these limitations through other means, such as using a second device, and that some data may temporarily exist on servers.

Put simply, view once for text isn’t invisibility. It’s an additional safeguard — one that addresses a genuine expectation from users without claiming to solve the broader privacy question on its own.

The real issue isn’t just whether you can make a message disappear. It’s knowing when doing so actually makes a difference.

Would you actually use view-once text messages, or is this just another option you’ll scroll past in WhatsApp’s settings?
