For decades, solar panels have been firmly grounded on Earth—it just made sense. But since 2024, Japan has been exploring a radically different approach: harvesting solar energy directly from space.
The Ohisama program: rethinking solar energy 🌞
As early as April 2024, science outlet Trust My Science reported that Japan was planning to launch a prototype space-based solar power station by 2025. The timeline slipped, but by February 2026, Franceinfo confirmed that the country had officially moved into the experimental phase.
Dubbed Ohisama—which means “sun” in Japanese—the program aims to overcome the limitations of ground-based solar panels, which require vast amounts of land. In orbit, solar panels could receive uninterrupted sunlight, potentially generating far more energy than systems on Earth.
Costs that are… astronomical 💸
That promise comes at a steep price. Launching satellites, converting solar energy into microwaves, and building ground-based receiving stations all contribute to soaring costs.
According to Franceinfo, electricity generated from space could cost up to fifteen times more per kilowatt-hour than conventional solar power.
A showcase of technological ambition 🇯🇵
For Japanese policymakers, profitability isn’t the immediate goal. Instead, the focus is on proving that space-based solar power is technically viable—and showcasing the country’s engineering and scientific expertise on a global stage.
It’s a bold move that reflects Japan’s determination to push the boundaries of energy innovation.
What if energy really came from space ? 🤔
For now, space-based solar power remains a complex and expensive bet. But in the long run, it could reshape how the world produces and consumes energy.
Japan may be laying the groundwork for a quiet—but potentially transformative—energy revolution.
