Snapchat’s Now Playing turns Snap Map into a live playlist 🎧🎵

Listening to the same song as your friends, in real time, without posting anything about it — that’s the pitch behind Now Playing, Snapchat’s latest addition to Snap Map. The feature lets users share in real time the tracks they’re currently streaming, right from the app’s interactive map. For now, it only works with Spotify. It’s designed to help you discover what your friends are listening to while making it easy to share your own taste in music.

Live sharing, right on the map🗺️

Once you link your Spotify account to Snapchat, whatever you’re playing shows up live on Snap Map. You can also check out what your friends are streaming, as long as they’ve opted in to sharing their own listening activity. Snapchat notes the feature won’t surface your listening history or your last-played track — only what’s playing at the exact moment someone checks.

Now Playing is also built into Spotlight, Snapchat’s short-form video format. Discover a song in a Spotlight video, and you can save it straight to Spotify or jump to the track’s page on the platform. Snapchat frames this as a way to make music discovery and access more seamless — though it remains to be seen whether users will be as comfortable broadcasting their listening habits as they are sharing their everyday Snaps.

Privacy settings you actually control 🔒

You stay in charge of who sees your listening activity — you choose exactly who’s allowed to see what you’re playing. Sharing only stays active as long as you’ve opened Snapchat within the past 24 hours. Go quiet longer than that, and sharing pauses automatically until you open the app again. You can also pause it manually for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely.

Social platforms are betting on music discovery 🎧

The move fits a broader pattern across social platforms leaning into music sharing as a discovery tool. TikTok already lets users share songs from streaming services and save tracks they come across on the app. Instagram, meanwhile, lets people display what they’re listening to through Notes, the short status updates that sit atop users’ DM inboxes. Spotify itself has built its own real-time sharing tools, letting users see what their friends are streaming.

A new layer for Snap Map 🌍

According to Manny Adler, Snapchat’s head of music, music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves — and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer. With Now Playing, the company wants to add a new dimension to Snap Map, letting users share the soundtrack to their day while discovering new music through the people they already know.

Launched in 2017, Snap Map originally let users see their friends’ locations and browse public Snaps from around the world. Over time, it’s expanded to include local hotspots, activities, and now, music discovery. Snapchat says the feature is rolling out to regions where both Spotify and Snapchat are available, with Canada coming soon.
