WhatsApp’s summer update reshapes calls and group chats 📞👥

In late July and early August 2026, WhatsApp announced two rounds of updates that change the game for calls and group chats: browser calling, and new tools to better manage group conversations. Here’s what’s changing.

Calling without the app: the update that changes everything 📞

Until now, making a WhatsApp call almost always meant having the app installed on your phone. With Web Calling, WhatsApp now lets you make and receive audio and video calls — one-on-one or group — directly from WhatsApp Web, no download required.

The use case is straightforward: a student on a shared cybercafé computer, an employee on a locked-down work laptop, or simply someone who prefers working from a browser. In all these cases, calling becomes accessible without any hardware constraints. WhatsApp says these calls remain end-to-end encrypted, with no time limit and no cost, carrying over the same features available on other devices: screen sharing, reactions, and a full Calls tab with history and favorites.

Several other improvements ship alongside this update:

  • Call Transfer, which lets you move an active group call from one device to another without hanging up — useful for starting a call on mobile while out and about, then continuing it on a laptop once home.
  • Waiting Room, for calls launched via a link with approval required: participants sit in a queue until the host lets them in.
  • QuickHD, reportedly delivering high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call, cutting the usual ramp-up delay.
  • Noise Suppression, adjustable mid-call in settings, to keep your voice clear even in a loud environment.

WhatsApp says these features are rolling out gradually before reaching everyone. No specific timeline has been shared for Cameroon so far.

Groups take back control with new tools 👥

Second front: group chats, often the place where WhatsApp gets hardest to follow. WhatsApp introduced three updates designed to smooth out group life.

Polls get more flexible: you can now set an end time to automatically lock voting, hide voter names so people feel freer to answer honestly, and edit a poll question within fifteen minutes of posting it, in case of a typo or unclear wording.

The @all mention lets you flag an important message to every member of a group, without tagging people one by one. In groups larger than 32 members, the feature is restricted to admins — a guardrail against abuse in bigger communities. Everyone still controls their own notifications and can mute @all at any time in settings.

Finally, WhatsApp is simplifying how you create a new group from an existing one: a single tap starts a fresh conversation with a subset of an existing group’s members, no need to add them one by one — handy for spinning off a side chat on a specific topic without cluttering the main thread.

WhatsApp is organizing itself, just like our digital lives 🔮

In the span of a week, WhatsApp made one thing clear: the app isn’t just a messaging tool anymore. It’s the infrastructure of daily life for millions of people across Cameroon — for trading, organizing, saving, studying, staying in touch. Against that backdrop, these updates read less like novelty features and more like a response to a need for structure: better control over who’s calling whom, who’s voting on what, who gets flagged for what.

One question lingers: as WhatsApp adds more control tools for groups, are admins of Cameroon’s already-crowded communities being pushed into becoming something like full-time moderators? The line between casual chat and structured community management keeps getting thinner.

So, which update are you most excited about: browser calling, or the smarter polls? Tell us in the comments how you actually use your WhatsApp groups day to day.
