WhatsApp built tags for clarity. Cameroon used them for comedy 🎭 🇨🇲

In a WhatsApp group, the same phone number can now be a school parent, « the dangerous one, » a big sister, a journalist, a class rep, a communications officer, or simply the person who never chips in. Since WhatsApp introduced member tags, anyone can display a short description of their role under their name in a specific group. The feature was designed to help people work out who’s who. Users, naturally, have found a better use for it: jokes.

In Cameroon, where WhatsApp is woven into daily life, a few words can quickly become a small digital ID card. Some people pick something practical. Others use the tag to state their role or their link to the group. And then there are those who spend those few characters making everyone laugh.

One tag per group 🏷️

The mechanics are simple. You can choose a different tag in each group you belong to. You might be « Brenda’s mum » in a parents’ group and « Goalkeeper » in your sports team’s chat. In Cameroon, people are using that freedom in more and more creative ways.

« I find it handy when the group is big. When you don’t know everyone, you quickly understand who’s who, » says Idriss Hamadou, a member of a community association’s group.

But once members already know each other, the tag can take a very different turn. It starts to carry a specific intention, or a message for the rest of the group.

When a tag becomes a nickname 😂

In some groups, nobody really needs to know who is an accountant, a teacher, a trader or a student. Everyone already does, as long as introductions happened when people joined. The tag then becomes a space for something else: a habit, a reputation, or just a gag.

A member can end up as « Minister of Finance » because they always hold the group’s money. Another becomes « Minister of Lateness » because they reliably show up after everyone else. A third is « After-sales service » because they answer every question. The serious profile gives way to personality.

« In our group, nobody really puts their job. We put what the others know us for. It’s become a way of teasing each other, » says Darline Manga, a user we spoke to about the feature.

How do people pick their tag? 😏

It sounds like a simple question, but the answers vary widely. Among the people we interviewed, some choose their actual role in the group, others their job, others simply their relationship to the other members. The more playful ones go for a phrase that sums up their personality.

In a family group, someone might be « Big sister. » In a professional group, the same person becomes « HR manager. » Among friends, they might choose « The one who loves a good palaver » (palabres, a word used in Cameroonian French for long, lively discussions and the drama that comes with them). The tag, in other words, depends on context.

« I’m not going to put my job in every group. In some places people already know me. Depending on how involved I am and how I get on with the members, I’d rather choose something that fits the mood of the group, » says Landry Ebode, a young user.

When old jokes go official 🤣

The funniest moment comes when a tag recycles a joke or a title everyone knows. A story told during a conversation, a legendary mistake, a nickname given by friends: any of them can suddenly appear under someone’s name.

A member who never replies might become « Seen at X o’clock, » a nod to the read receipt that proves they saw your message and stayed silent. The one who keeps telling everyone to watch out can inherit the title « The group’s dangerous one. » And whoever organises every outing might become « The events ace. »

« The funniest thing is when someone changes their tag and the whole group starts commenting. It can bring back a joke that’s years old, » says Murielle Manga, a user.

The tag is no longer just descriptive. It becomes a small group memory that reminds everyone of a particular moment.

One person, several characters 📱

The feature also fits a reality that already defines how people use WhatsApp: nobody presents themselves the same way everywhere. A tag lets you switch roles depending on the digital space you’re in.

« It’s like real life. You don’t introduce yourself the same way to your colleagues, your family and your friends, » says Line Atangana, a user.

That small line under a name becomes a way to give your presence some context. And in group chats, humorous tags can quickly snowball. Local expressions, nicknames, friendly jabs and deliberately inflated titles all find a natural home there. « CEO of palavers, » « Treasurer with no money, » « Minister of Family Affairs » or « The influencer » are funny because they turn an ordinary role into an official position.

« That’s exactly what I like. The feature was maybe made to identify members, but we can do whatever we want with it. It helps you de-stress and add a touch of humour to our chats, » says Ivan Omaya, a user.

The group becomes a kind of small theatre, where everyone picks a character.

Not everyone wants to joke 👀

Some users prefer to keep it plain. In a professional or school group, a clear tag is far more useful than a funny nickname. It lets people understand someone’s role without scrolling back through old messages.

« In a work group, I prefer to put my position. If someone is looking for the person in charge of a task, they should be able to find me easily, » says Larrisa Massock, a young professional.

So the choice also depends on what the group is for. The more formal the group, the more serious the tag tends to be. The closer the group, the more room there is for creativity.

So what does your tag say about you? 🎭

Behind that small line under a name, there is more than a simple piece of information. A tag can tell people what you do, but also how others see you.

It can recall your place in a group, your reputation, or a joke you share with the others. Above all, it lets one person hold several identities across the spaces they move in.

On WhatsApp, a few words are now enough to signal a role, show a personality or set off a joke. In Cameroon, these little tags have become digital nicknames.
