Mozambique is accelerating its technological shift. The government is preparing to launch the ATDI — the Agency for Digital Transformation and Innovation — a structure set to play a key role in modernizing the country’s digital ecosystem.

The future agency will be led by Adilson Dos Santos Cousin Gomes, appointed as chairman of the board. The ATDI’s primary mission will be to harmonize interoperability across the various digital platforms deployed nationwide. It will also ensure stronger oversight of data centers and foster the development of new digital systems capable of meeting the growing needs of citizens, public institutions, and businesses.

Within this momentum, the Mozambican government is setting ambitious targets: reaching a mobile penetration rate of 80% and achieving nationwide internet coverage of 95% in the coming years. Through intensive fiber optic deployment and the use of satellite technologies, the country also aims to reach network stability levels as high as 99%.

Connection performance is expected to improve significantly. Average speeds could increase from 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) with the rollout of 5G, while 4G speeds are projected to rise from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps, according to government estimates.

Commissions and coordination of digital transformation 🏛️

A decree formalizing the creation of a National Commission for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA), along with a multisectoral technical commission responsible for coordinating and implementing digital transformation (CTD), was published on March 10. These bodies will support the national strategy and coordinate initiatives related to technological innovation.

In a global context marked by intense competition around digital technologies, digital transformation is emerging as a strategic lever for economic development. Maputo aims to position itself as a dynamic player in this new economy and avoid being left behind in the ongoing digital revolution.

What do you think? Can digital transformation really propel Mozambique to become a technological leader in Africa? Let us know in the comments.
