Airports of Morocco announced the rollout of a new system called Pax Check on July 23. According to the National Airports Office (ONDA), which now operates under the Airports of Morocco brand, the goal is to gradually replace the paper boarding pass with a fully digital one stored on passengers’ smartphones — another sign of how central digital tools are becoming to critical infrastructure across the continent, a shift Cameroon is only starting to have its own conversations about.

How Pax Check works 📲

The system relies on a direct link between travelers and their airline. Passengers first check in through their carrier’s mobile app, which generates a secure QR code — their digital key for the entire trip. Airlines are then responsible for verifying that code at every step of the journey. Once validated, the digital boarding pass can be used at authorized gates and security checkpoints, gradually standing in for the traditional paper document.

A shift that’s changing the experience 🌍

This move marks a turning point in how Moroccan airports approach the passenger experience. Over time, the long lines tied to manual document checks could give way to a faster, mobile-driven, more secure process. For Pax Check to reach every airline operating in Morocco, a number of technical and regulatory boxes still need to be checked. Each carrier will need to align its information systems with Moroccan airport regulations, while making sure its tech infrastructure meets the reliability bar required to protect passenger data and guarantee the authenticity of every digital pass issued. A precise timeline for full rollout hasn’t been shared yet.

Morocco is joining a small club of countries aligning their airport infrastructure with the latest international tech standards, all while sticking to the national and international rules that govern how airports run.
