Digital safety: Algeria launches a monitoring unit for children 👨‍💻

In response to the growing dangers of the digital world, Algeria is taking action. Starting in 2025, a national monitoring unit will be established to protect children from online threats. This initiative is part of a broader cybersecurity strategy and aims to safeguard the rights of young people.

A 24/7 monitoring unit 👶

The unit will be led by Meriem Chorfi, the National Delegate for Child Protection, and will operate 24/7. Its mission is to monitor online content, detect illegal activities, and respond swiftly to threats. Any identified risks will be reported to the relevant authorities. This initiative brings together specialists from the fields of justice, security, education, and digital technologies.

This project is grounded in Algeria’s 2020 Constitution, which places significant emphasis on children’s rights. It also aligns with the national plan for 2025-2030, aiming to enhance healthcare, education, and security systems for young people. With a score of 65.87 out of 100 on the Global Cybersecurity Index, Algeria is making progress and seeks to develop tools to better address emerging threats.

Alarming statistics 🌍

Online threats are a global concern. According to the UN, one-third of young people in 30 countries have been victims of cyberbullying, and about 80% of children are exposed to abusive or sexual content. These figures highlight the urgent need for action. Algeria aspires to be a leader in combating these dangers. Across Africa and the Arab world, the country aims to set the foundation for a safer digital environment.

Additionally, the monitoring unit plans to launch educational campaigns targeting families, teachers, and students. The goal is to teach best practices for safe Internet use. Parents and educators will be trained to use parental control tools, while children will learn how to identify and protect themselves from online risks.
