For years, fans have been waiting for this moment: Spotify Hi-Fi is finally here, promising to turn every listening session into an audiophile-level experience. No more compromises — Spotify is bringing lossless audio to millions of subscribers at no extra cost.
What exactly is Hi-Fi? 🔍
Hi-Fi, short for “high fidelity,” is all about authentic, detailed, lossless sound — in other words, music the way it was recorded in the studio. Spotify’s new Hi-Fi mode supports FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, a major step up from the platform’s previous 320 kbps Ogg Vorbis compression. The result? Cleaner detail, more nuance, and audio that really shines on quality gear.
Catching up with the competition ⚔️
Apple Music and Tidal have been offering lossless audio for years, sometimes pushing resolutions up to 24-bit/192 kHz and even spatial audio. Spotify, meanwhile, has lagged behind. Hi-Fi finally closes that strategic gap: every Premium subscriber gets access without paying more. Still, the feature trails competitors on paper — no spatial audio and a slightly lower maximum resolution. Hardcore audiophiles may stick with Tidal or Apple, but for most listeners, the jump in quality will be obvious.
How to enable Hi-Fi 🛠️
Turning on Hi-Fi is simple: go to “Settings,” then “Audio Quality,” and choose “Lossless.” The option is rolling out across Spotify’s mobile, desktop, and tablet apps, as well as most devices that support Spotify Connect — from Bluetooth headphones to home hi-fi systems by Sony, Bose, Yamaha, or Sennheiser. Keep in mind: not all devices and operating systems support it yet. Make sure your app is up to date and that your hardware can handle lossless playback.
Availability and eligibility 🌍
Spotify Hi-Fi is only available to Premium subscribers. The rollout covers 50 major markets — including the U.S., U.K., France, Japan, and Australia — with full availability expected by October 2025. There’s no extra fee: Hi-Fi is automatically enabled once it’s live in your region. All you really need is the latest version of the app — and a decent pair of headphones to appreciate the upgrade.
A step forward for Spotify, but the sound wars aren’t over 🔮
Hi-Fi marks a turning point for the world’s most popular streaming platform. While it doesn’t quite match Apple Music or Tidal in technical specs, it democratizes lossless audio in a way no other service has, making studio-quality sound accessible to millions. What’s next? Possibly spatial audio, or even higher-resolution formats. For now, it’s a big win for Spotify listeners who want to rediscover their music libraries with fresh ears.
