While ChatGPT announced the release of its new GPT-4 core, we wondered where Google was with conversational AI, called Bard. We now have the answer as the web giant has made it available in the Beta version.
What is Google Bard?🤖
If you have no idea of what Google Bard is, well, it’s simple: it’s the alternative to ChatGPT, Google way. Announced with great advertisement a little more than a month ago, it has particularly marked spirits because of an error in a presentation video, resulting in a loss of $ 100 billion in Google’s stock market. We give you all the details in the article you can find by clicking here.
Like ChatGPT, Bard is based on what is called a Large Language Model (LLM). In simple terms, this is a set of data that, once processed, allows a machine to predict words and sentences following a given text. We can say that it is a prediction engine. The model used by ChatGPT is called GPT-4, while the one used by Bard is called LaMDA. Google Bard is therefore an interface allowing access to this prediction engine.
Google Bard for which uses?🪄
Google presents Bard as a tool which helps to :
boost your productivity, accelerate your ideas and fuel your curiosity.
For example, you can ask it to give you tips on how to reach your goal of reading more books this year, explain quantum physics in simple terms, or stimulate your creativity by outlining a blog post. You’ll even have a choice of results, and from there you can select the one that’s right for you and ask follow-up questions. And if you don’t like anything, just ask them to do it again.
However, as Google reminds us, it does not aim to replace Google Search. Contrarily, it is a « complementary experience to Google Search ». A « Google It » option is proposed to check the information. By clicking on it, search suggestions will be made, a new tab will open to find to deepen your search.
A technology not free of defects⚠️
Just like its alternative ChatGPT, Bard is full of flaws. As so well reminded by Google, Bard learns from a
wide range of information that reflects real-world biases and stereotypes
And since it is just a prediction engine, these biases and stereotypes may be reflected in its answers. Similarly, the information provided may be false, inaccurate or misleading. Except that Bard is unaware of this and will always present it with confidence.
Google is aware of this and reassures that their work is principled and focused on quality and safety. Human feedback is used to improve Bard, and safeguards such as the limited number of exchanges, have been put in place.
Bard is open in Beta, via bard.google.com, only in the US and UK. It will be rolled out to other countries and languages later.
