A day doesn’t go by without talking about Artificial Intelligence, and especially generative AI. While OpenAI has presented the new GPT-4, which we have reviewed here, Google has announced the integration of a similar AI in its office suite, Google Workspaces

An AI as an assistant🤖

Despite the failed launch of its ChatGPT competitor, Google has not turned its back on AIs. The Mountain View company is following the trend of the Tech industry and will integrate AI into its tools starting with its office suite.

Google hopes to offer its users an assistant that will allow them to go even further with the various tools that are Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Meet and Chat. Google announces that users will have the ability to:

  • write, reply, summarize and prioritize in Gmail
  • brainstorm, proofread, write and rewrite in Docs,
  • bring their creative vision to life with automatically generated images, audio and video in Slides,
  • move from raw data to insights and analysis with auto-completion, formula generation and contextual categorization in Sheets,
  • generate new backgrounds and capture notes in Meet,
  • activate workflows to get things done in Chat.

Google Docs and Gmail lead the way 📄

The first tools in the Workspace suite that will benefit from this are Docs and Gmail. Google hopes that its new assistant will make the blank page syndrome disappear. So with Google Docs, all you need is a subject for the AI to create a draft for you. You will be able to start from this base to refine and modify the text, with suggestions from the AI. Google gives us an example with the creation of a job form, just from the key phrase « Job offer for a regional representative ». Magic, don’t you think?

It’s the same idea for Gmail, but it’s even more precise. Sending an email can be a more difficult task than it seems. You have to be able to adapt the style and tone to the recipients. And that’s where Google’s magic comes in. With a few elements, the assistant will be able to rewrite your email according to a tone that you choose. There’s even an « I feel lucky » option to let the AI do its thing. The example below shows how Gmail can generate a formal email from simple notes. Check out the result.

Google doesn’t want to rush the process and implement AI in the right way 😌

If you were already rushing to your browser or Gmail application,

These new features will only be available in English for now, only in the United States, and only through a program of trusted testers. Depending on the feedback, Google will make improvements before making its assistants available to the general public. We understand that Google wants to avoid the same setbacks that Microsoft has encountered with Bing.

In particular, Google wants to allow users to maintain control when using AI. Google also wants to put safeguards in place against abuse, while protecting the privacy of user data and respecting customers’ data governance controls. This will include administrative controls so that IT departments can set the right rules for their organization.

And as a reminder,

AI does not replace the ingenuity, creativity and intelligence of real people. Sometimes AI gets it wrong, sometimes it delights you with something offbeat, and often it needs guidance.

What do you think of these new features? and of generative AIs in general? Have you already tested them? Tell us all about it in comments.
