AI fever is taking hold of many tech companies, and Zoom is no exception to the trend, turning its attention to generative artificial intelligence. Last March, the company announced the Zoom IQ feature, which generates summaries at the end of videoconference meetings. This new feature is now available to selected users.

How does Zoom IQ work? ⁉️🤔

As a reminder, Zoom IQ helps to summarize meetings with customers and participants, even takes into account tasks already completed, and takes notes for absentees.

In other words, when the feature is available, the host automatically receives an AI-generated summary and shares it [if he so wishes] with his collaborators, either by e-mail or via Zoom Chat. And all this is done without having to record the conversations. A good point.

🎯The one and only downside is that this new feature is currently only compatible with English.

Zoom makes a mix of several AI

The company reports that, in addition to using its own large linguistic AI models, it is collaborating with other AI labs, including OpenAI (creator of ChatGPT) and Anthropic (a promising lab in which Google is one of the investors). The idea, by using several AIs, is to better meet the very diverse needs of the company’s customers.

“With the introduction of these new capabilities in Zoom IQ, an incredible generative AI assistant, teams can further enhance their productivity for everyday tasks, freeing up more time for creative work and expanding collaboration,” said Smita Hashim, chief product officer at Zoom.

“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to large language models, and with Zoom’s federated approach to AI, we are able to bring powerful capabilities to our customers and users through Zoom’s own models as well as our partners’ models.”

Zoom joins the IA movement

One thing’s for sure: Zoom is all about generative AI (competition be damned). And in addition to this AI that summarizes meetings, it has also just launched Team Chat Compose. Based on OpenAI technologies, this new feature generates draft responses for users, taking into account previous exchanges.

Other functions, based on generative AI, are also in the pipeline:

  • A feature that will generate a draft e-mail taking into account exchanges with the recipient in video, during calls, and in previous e-mails.
  • Another feature will soon be able to summarize the content of a thread on Zoom’s messaging system. And for those who arrive late to a meeting, Zoom will also be able to summarize the part they missed. In addition, Zoom will also offer AI-powered features for its whiteboard.

The videoconferencing specialist is announcing these new features at a time when its main competitors, Google and Microsoft, are also pushing ahead with generative AI.
