If you’re a regular YouTube user, you’ve probably noticed a growing trend towards catchy, sometimes exaggerated titles, to the point of sometimes misleading you about the actual content. YouTube wants to tackle this phenomenon using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

YouTube gives you summaries thanks to AI🤖

The web is full of nuggets when it comes to content creation, and YouTube is no exception. And that makes for a lot of competition. However, these creators are getting bigger, and are giving their all to hyperbole in order to attract, stand out and meet the demands of the platform’s algorithms.

While the platform’s algorithms encourage such practices, YouTube is developing an AI capable of summarizing a video in a few seconds, similar to a synopsis.

We’re starting to test AI auto-generated summaries on YouTube, so that it’s easier for you to read a quick summary about a video and decide whether it’s the right fit for you.

So when a thumbnail appears on the screen with the title underneath, a brief summary will give an idea of the video’s content in just a few seconds, much like a synopsis. No more deceptions or sensational titles.😅

YouTube’s aim is twofold: firstly, to prevent the rapid propagation of misleading headlines, thus helping to combat false information. This is a benevolent intention, although the algorithms paradoxically encourage creators to adopt such practices.

The second objective is to keep users on the platform as long as possible and optimize the recommendation system.

The fight against TikTok continues⚔️

This new feature, currently in the experimental phase, is part of a strategy to counter the expansion and phenomenal success of TikTok’s vertical format videos. In fact, YouTube ended up copying this format with its Shorts, which the platform now seems to want to favor, if the latest YouTube creator remuneration conditions are anything to go by. Indeed, the company is clearly encouraging creators to opt for vertical rather than horizontal formats if they want to participate in the creator program.

According to the company, YouTube Shorts generates 2 billion views per month. To further increase this audience, YouTube is preparing to launch « Live Shorts », a feature already present on TikTok for some time. Collaborations will also play a central role in YouTube Shorts’ strategy, to reinforce its position as a serious alternative to TikTok.
