20 Years in prison for AI? The U.S. strikes hard ⚡

Artificial intelligence is the new battleground for global superpowers, and the United States is not willing to let China take the lead. A new U.S. bill aims to ban DeepSeek, a Chinese language model rivaling GPT-4, threatening users with up to 20 years in prison and a million-dollar fine. But this decision goes far beyond a simple tech regulation.

A radical ban: DeepSeek becomes persona non grata 🚫

The bill, titled « Decoupling America’s Artificial Intelligence Capabilities from China Act, » seeks to outright ban DeepSeek in the U.S. The proposed penalties are unprecedented: fines up to a million dollars and up to 20 years in prison for anyone downloading or using the chatbot.

Officially, the main concern is national security. DeepSeek stores user data on Chinese servers, which Washington deems an unacceptable risk. The AI is perceived as a threat to U.S. digital sovereignty, potentially being exploited by Beijing to collect sensitive data.

Too powerful? DeepSeek worries OpenAI🕵️️

Beyond security concerns, another reason seems to be emerging: DeepSeek is incredibly powerful. Its R1 model is reportedly capable of competing with GPT-4 while being significantly cheaper to develop. This prospect has raised concerns at OpenAI and other American AI leaders.

Ironically, OpenAI accuses DeepSeek of using its own data for training. This accusation mirrors the many criticisms OpenAI itself has faced, particularly from authors and publishers claiming their content was scraped without permission.

An economic and geopolitical war above all💀

This bill doesn’t just target DeepSeek. It also aims to prohibit any collaboration between U.S. and Chinese companies in the AI sector. Joint research, cross-border investments, and technology exchanges would all be blocked. The goal is clear: slow down China’s AI progress and maintain U.S. dominance in this strategic field.

This isn’t the first time the U.S. has taken a hard stance against Chinese tech. The Huawei case and restrictions on TikTok come to mind. This new offensive against DeepSeek is part of a broader strategy of technological decoupling between the two powers.

Banning an AI and criminalizing its use to this extent is unprecedented. If this bill passes, it could set a worrying precedent for digital freedom and innovation. Beyond the power struggle between Washington and Beijing, the real question remains: how far will the AI war go? And more importantly, who will ultimately pay the price?
