Chatbots like ChatGPT have become everyday companions for many users. They provide assistance, advice, and sometimes even a form of comfort. However, a study conducted by the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in collaboration with OpenAI highlights a more concerning aspect of this interaction.
A study on 40 million interactions 📊
To better understand ChatGPT’s impact on its users, researchers anonymously analyzed 40 million interactions with the chatbot. They also surveyed 4,000 users about their perception of the tool. A second study examined the usage patterns of 1,000 volunteers over a one-month period.
The results reveal a correlation between the intensity of chatbot use and signs of loneliness, emotional dependence, or even « problematic use, » a form of ChatGPT addiction. Researchers found that many users engage in frequent and prolonged conversations with the AI. Through these exchanges, they may develop an emotional attachment, sometimes at the expense of their human interactions.
A mode of interaction that influences well-being 💬
The study highlights a key factor: the way users interact with ChatGPT affects their well-being differently. Those who favor moderate voice interaction seem less prone to loneliness and emotional dependence than those who primarily use text-based communication.
Another surprising discovery: personal conversations tend to increase feelings of loneliness. However, they reduce emotional dependence, while impersonal discussions tend to strengthen it.
A small group of at-risk users 🚨
While most users do not express excessive attachment, researchers identified a small group showing real signs of addiction. This group extensively uses the advanced voice mode and is more likely to agree with statements such as: « I consider ChatGPT my friend. »
This study raises questions about the impact of prolonged interactions with chatbots. It also questions the responsibility of AI developers. Should certain features be restricted, or should users be more aware of the risks of digital dependence?
Thanks to this study, we now understand that the rise of conversational AIs is reshaping our relationship with technology, with implications that still need further exploration.
